Restricted Feats

Creepshow

First Post
Hey,

Was wondering if any DMs out there use restricted feats in thier games? What I mean is, only certain feats can be learned in certain areas.

I am working on a Scarred Lands campaign and am thinking of using many of the warrior societies (Legions of Ash, Paladins of Corean ect..) have ascess to a few feats that they would use. I don't want to make it too hard to get many of the more general feats, but would like to keep a couple for "flavor" purposes.

I think you could make some pretty interesting schools in general. Would be neat for a PC to have to go on a small quest for one of the major feats. I suppose if you went this route you could use the variation for training in the DMG. PCs would advance in skills and most feats on thier own, but some feats could require different things to obtain.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It's just an idea...

It'd be easier to just leave the Feats from the Core Books as open to any and all that want them. I tend to think of anything in the Core Books as being 'the basics', tricks so old that everyone knows about them by now.

However, your idea is a great way to introduce Feats (or spells, ect.) from other source material. Simply say that they'd heard of a group that's been using that technique, or that there are stories of a group that's just discovered a 'new' trick that only they know about. You could also give new names to these Feats, to add flavor as well as throw the party off the track.

Just keep in mind that any group that has based it's success on a given 'trick' will unlikely to give that secret to just anyone that asks. If you figure out how those Horse Nomads always manage to dart in, strike, and dodge back out of reach (ie: Spring Attack and Mounted Combat) you're well on your way to countering the tactic. Just gaining the trust and/or respect of your prospective teachers could be an adventure in itself, perhaps even a campain!

Greetings Creep!

For myself, while I leave the Core rules feats relatively intact I also tend to make it so that metamagic feats (at least ones beyond the Core Rules) have to be learned else where.

I also think regionally, you should go with things like: Vesh:
Expertise, Track, Two Weapon Fighting, Improved Two Weapon Fighting, Ambidexitery. Blind Fighting, Endurance, Dodge, Track, Quick Draw, Great Fortitude Run.

Mithril: Sunder, Craft Magical Arms and Armor, Cleave, Great Cleave, Extra Turning, Deflect Arrows, Iron Will, Weapon Focus: Longsword, Skill Focus, Spell Focus: Weapon Specialization, Improved Initative, Leadership, Mounted Combat, Tramble, Ride by, Spirited Charge, Improved Bull Rush.

Hope that helps.

Hatchling Dragon,

Thats a great idea!
It would keep things mysterious without taking too much away from the players. Gods know there are enough feats floating about online and elsewhere that I could probably make dozens of different training type schools.

Nighfall,

Would you make the feats you listed exclusive to the groups you mentioned? If so, would they be hard to obtain?

The ideas I have been having involve Darakeene. What with all the war collages and many of the mercenary guilds, opportunities abound for crafting specilized feat lists.

Good to see another SL fan, would you happen to know of any great SL sites/forums?

I wouldn't say exclusive but mainly paladins, fighters, warriors in Mithril know these feats, since they are pretty good at defending. They generally train others, either as a way of paying off a debt and/or just improving others that pass through. At least in Mithril. Vesh, it depends, since the Vigils tend to only train Viligants, but doesn't mean they wouldn't have a few fighters that know these feats, especially since they would like them to be ready.

I'm sure the war colleges would teach such things, especially since they have, along with the colleges, mercenary guilds along with the Swords of Corean (the Coreanic Orders, Mithril, Silver, Iron and Gold) being there as well. (Though the Order of the Iron had a much larger chapter house if I remember correctly, since they do seige warfare along with forging.

Well I'm glad you like it. I have a few places I know of. Two of them I moderate at.

I have my own section on their boards.

Also there's the offical forums for the Scarred Lands

Hope that helps.
