D&D 5E Retraining (players, not characters)

Yeah that kind sounds like the aoo recursive loops that you could dig yourself into in 3e.

Yeah, exactly. Our DM stopped that with a simple HR that "you cannot use an action that provokes AoO as an AoO itself" but this might have been too much for some.

It's not actually clear to me how it should work in 5e, but my guess is that reactions happen just after the trigger (if "at the same time" is not applicable). At least that's what happens for reactions which resolve readied actions, but IIRC there is no general rule for other reactions.

It's going to take a lot of time and mental effort for me to remember:

1) A small bonus is important now; worth a lot more than it was in 3E or 4E. Can't just say "Oh, it's only +1, whatever."

2) Lower stats are expected, and don't mean a character is gimped.

3) Casting, standing, etc. do not draw AoOs.

I feel like little details of that sort are going to be a lot harder to internalize than any of the more major edition changes we've seen from 2E to 3E, 3E to 4E, or 4E to this. :o

Glad to see you're checking out the new edition :)

I think the hard part will be retraining them to remove the "5-foot step into flank" and remove the "conga-line of death" and other grid-based combat maneuvers.

We shall see.

Totally looking forward to doing this. I like being off the grid.

Bonus!

The issue I found playing with Move/Minor/Standard actions was that the presentation of it made players spend a lot of time trying to think of something to do with they're Minor action, just because they had one, so they wanted to use it. Making the same sort of actions a Bonus! or "insignificant, such as drawing a sword or opening a door" seems semantic but definitely has an effect on play at the table.
