Retro Clone Abilities Question

Generally speaking, the point of a retro close is to replicate a previous game edition.

3e never really died with the OGL (which retro clones generally use to build upon) and 4e is still alive (until Next drives the final neil in).

Most retroclones us ascending AC, or dual stat the AC with ascending / descending numbers.

As for the stat adjustments, they general hew pretty close to the system they are trying to replicate.

Mathematically, the ascending AC thing is the same as the old style descending AC, so a lot of retroclones do use it, since math beyond simple addition apparently confuses people.

But the stats, that's quite a bit different - I think the only D&D that had stats going up and up and up like 3e (and later) was the Immortals rules for BECMI. And that was for playing characters that were basically gods by another name.

What exactly are you asking for? The ascending AC thing is in many retroclones (such as ACKS) but it often goes up from 0 rather than from 10. The ability bonus progressions in Advanced or Basic are almost the same as the one you're listing here, except that they might cap out at +3 instead of +4. If you really want to have the exact progression from 3e, why not just houserule it?

I think I'm looking for an AD&D clone with 3E math.

The optimist in me says that 5E will be close enough.

But if it had 3e math, it wouldn't be AD&D anymore ;)

Simple solution is to take AD&D (or OSRIC) and just use the 3e math for the stat modifiers. Should really break anything. At least, no more than any other house ruling might... heh
