That episode "Believers" is a real love or hate episode for many. It was written by D.C. Fontana, so it's not suprising it seemed like a Star Trek episode. Mind you, the worst episode, IMHO was "Infection". JMS wishes that one would could be burned and forgotten, I think. Man, was it a stinker.Baraendur said:I aknowledge that the episode you mention took a risk by making socio-religious commentary, but out of the entire series, that was my least favorite episode. It was too much like a ST:TNG episode, except that the makeup was bad and the script wasn't very good either. It did manage to redeem itself a bit at the end when they didn't have the happy ST ending, but all that inane buildup for that just wasn't worth the time invested.
And yes, the second season where the Markab are wiped out is an amazing episode, everything the "believer" episode isn't. It's deeply affecting and powerful. It's made even more powerful by the fact that the Markab were in every episode prior to that, often in any shot in public, as well as likable characters. Then they just weren't.
