Return of the King front-runner for Oscar night

As my friends and I were waiting for the lights to go down on RotK, we joked about how LotR will get snubbed yet again in the "best costume" department. Its so like the Oscars to not consider the artistic creativity and hard work behind costume designs of things that don't exist. I guess they consider costume design based on how accurately the department recreates a certain time period. Most that win are like period piece related in nature. Which is odd. Isn't harder to create costumes where you have no starting reference what so ever?

I jokingly said, "I bet 'Best Costume' will go to 'Cold Mountain'." My friends and I laughed. But afterwards we all agreed that joking aside, that might actually happen. Sadly.

What's worse is that a lot of period films just rent costumes from costume warehouses...and then win Oscars for it. Saw a costumer who did a lot of sci/fi complain about that in a documentary about a year ago. She thought it was a lot harder to design good costumes for alien cultures than research stuff that actually existed.

Lord of the Rings did a bit of both; a lot of research into armor and costumes that did exist, and then some creative license to make sure they didn't actually look exactly like some historical culture.

Maybe if Vera Wang designed Arwen's wedding gown, there's be some hype and RotK would get a Best Costume Oscar!

It has the potential to get best picture.
It should get best director.
I hope Astin gets best supporting actor. He has done a remarkable job, but the ensemble nature of the cast will most likely hamstring that.
It should get best costume
It should get best adaptation from a novel
It should get it for Cinematography
They should make an Oscar for best voice talent of an animated character (given Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, Gollum, Dobby, Scooby Doo, etc.)

My prediction is that it will get Director, Costume, Cinematography and Adaptation.

There are chances for various best performer categories, (actor, actress, supporting actress, supporting actor), but if it gets Director, Costume, Cinematography and adaptation, they might use those to throw a bone to other films.

Hope it wins best picture, but I doubt it.

Then again, RotK could just sweep it... (Hey, I can fantasise, I _AM_ a dungeon master after all...)

Aaron.

I cried lots in Return of the King, so it has the tear factor going towards winning the Oscar. When the Rohirrim appear on the Pellanor Fields is INTENSE.

Hmm. No LOTR actor nor actress gets a Golden Globe nomination. Does this mean we won't see any more Oscar nomination beyond Best Film, Best Musical Score, and Best Technical Effects (several categories)?

Possibly. :(

It did just win New York Film Critics "Picture of the Year" and Entertainment Weekly just picked their "Entertainer of the Year" - rather than a person, the winner was Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
