Inspired by the thread discussing the RttToH and the player who 'freaked' out, I thought a poll would capture how other ENWorlder would feel in a similar circumstance.

Here is the setup: Your DM pulls out RttToH and shows your group it and states that this is the next adventure in your ongoing campaign. Your group is the proper level for entry into the module. So, what is your reaction?

My choice is "Send me in cold, coach!"

I've little interest in that module, or others like it, but for completely different reasons than that I fear character death.

Heck, I could use a little more character death in my life. I feel like I'm playing in pansy-land sometimes. ;)

I voted - I laugh in the face of danger. Send me in cold, coach!

But only as a one shot type adventure with a character made for the occasion

I don't mind killing characters but killing a serious long running character in a character killer like this just isn't fun.

RttToH is an eerie, moody, cool adventure.

It just happen to be based on a meatgrinder.

I certainly would not want to run it as a meatgrinder, and would give players adequate forewarning of the dangers in the ToH section.

I still think it would be wrong to not run it as a dangerous adventure.

I voted "I would play it, trusting the DM to make it a fun experience and not a slaughterfest."

Unfortunately, that's only half the answer. The better answer is, "I would play it, trusting the DM to make it a fun experience and not a slaughterfest, so long as it's a one-off."

My group just finished RttToH. Well, actually, it just finished them

We played it as a one-off, somewhat modified adventure. They pretty much walked through the first half: Desatysso's tower, the journey to the Black Academy, the Academy itself and, surprisingly, the original tomb, besting Acererack with little problem (although that's not how they saw it!). It was a TPK against the Vestige in Moil, however.

I'd vote to play cold. I trust the DM to play it how it goes, and everyone, DM included, to try and make it fun and have fun, but not to tone it down, assuming as BlackMoria said, party is of appropriate level.

Of course, I probably wouldn't make it past the first encounter outside the tavern in the beginning, but hey, I'd try to have fun with it. Who knows? By the end, I probably would've gone through a buncha different characters ;)

Just curious, did you play 3 or 3.5? If so, how did
the conversion of the Vestige go (without too many spoilers for the folks who haven't played/read the module)? I remember reading it for the first time and thinking it was one of the toughest, most ingenious monsters ever. It scares the hell out of me, and I haven't even played it (in fact, I'd probably be DM if my group ever ran it.
Nice job, Bruce Cordell! The man writes an excellent (extremely tough) adventure.
