Revenge from a DM (Help me create a PC for City of the Spider Queen)

wujenta

First Post
One of my players is going to DM city of the spider queen and has told the rest of the group to made pc of level 10. He is the powergamer of the group and the rest of the players, as well as me, are going to make the most powergamer pc’s we could to make him taste his own medicine. My PC will be this:

Half Ogre cleric of tempus level 9

STR 26
DEX 12
CON 20
INT 12
SAB 18
CAR 6

The bonus to stats for level are included

Domains: war & strength

Equipment: large battleaxe +3, large plate mail +3, large shield +2, boots of speed, cloak resistance +1 and necklace of karma (+4 caster level for 10 minutes)
Feats: spellcasting prodigy, extend spell, persistent spell, power attack and the 2 free feats from the war domain

So I will have an Total attack bonus of 17/12 doing 2D6+11 if I use the large battleaxe in one hand or 2D6+15 in two hands. Add the divine favor, cast as at level 13 (thanks to the necklace of karma) to add +4 to attack&damage for a total of 21/16 and +15 to damage or +19. The AC will be good too (10 base +1 dexterity +11 platemail + 4 shield + 4 natural armor –1 size) for a total of 29

What do you think about this PC? Is he a good PC for the City of Spider Queen? Could you tell me something to make him more powerful? You coul use any WoTC book and FRCS book

The other PC will be a Star elf sorcerer with nearly 30 in charisma , a tiefling rogue/fighter archer, a straight fighter and a aasimar monk/paladin/sacred fist.

What do you think of the party mix? Will you change any character? I don’t know much about the module, but I don’t want to find that unless you have a (put a specific class here) you will have a lot of trouble playing it.

Thanks in advance
:)

First of all, what is SAB?

It looks to me like the DM gave you a very high point buy, so maybe he expects you guys to powergame?

One thing that jumps out at me is you only have a cloak of resistance +1. That seems pretty low for a 10th level character. If you're facing drow, you're bound to run up against a lot of spellcasters, so you'll want your saves to be high. I'd drop something (maybe the boots of speed?) and take a cloak +3, or at least +2.

Also, I question whether Spellcasting Prodigy is worth it for this character. You seem to be building a combat monster, so you might want to take something like Cleave instead.

My guess is that wujenta is Spanish or Latin American, which would explain the use of a different contraction for "Wisdom".

wujenta: That's a pretty darn powerful character, but you already have enough melee types in the party. You should go straight human cleric and skip the half-ogre. I'd order abilities as follows: Wis, Cha, Con, Str, Int, Dex. As for deities, some good options are as follows:

Red Knight (Planning, War)
Lathander (Renewal, Sun): Greater Turning is awfully nice!
Sharess (Travel, Trickery): Two excellent core domains

Of course, if you'd like two cleric archers in the party, you could take Labelas Enoreth as your patron, be an elf, and take the Elf and Time domains.

For a regular ol'cleric, take Spellcasting Prodigy and Power Attack as your first-level feats. If you have the Red Knight as a patron, you're set on Extend Spell, but otherwise, you should pick that up as well. Throw in Extra Turning at 3rd or 6th level, Divine Might at 6th or 9th level, and Persistent Spell at any point 9th level or onward, and you're set for feats.

Sorry, I'm from Spain and used SAB (Sabiduria) instead of WIS... I know the stat are high, but we use to roll and I get very lucky. Our metod is 4D6, choose 3, and repeat any 1's you get. I will think about changing boots for a better cloak...

I would reiterate ruleslawyer's point: go for a turning/healing
dude.

Additionally, it may be just me, but I never leave home without
boots of flying.

After experience powergaming this very adventure, here are some points:

*Ring of the Darkhiden: invis to darkvision. If you don't use light, it makes you immune to sight by the drow. It is cheap, and in this adventure it is broken.

*Convince the sorcerer to take Incantantrix and abuse long duration spells as well as greater spell penetration.

*Tell the sorcerer to get a mirthral buckler +1 of command. See the second cleric description below for why this is important.

*Convince the rogue to take shadowdancer for 1 level. Hide in plain sight is amazing when there is no light. You can hide anywhere.

*Make sure every character has a way to fly (as the fly spell) as it will make life much easier.

*Arms and eqipment, blindfold of true dark. 60' continuous blindsight, immunity to sight based attacks. Cheap.

The most broken character in the game I played was a human cleric of Sevarash with elf and war domains. Point blank, rapid shot, extend spell, persistant spell, Zen Archery. He magiced up his own equipment with GMW and Magic Vestments, wore a ring of the darkhidden, and killed. We called him the stapple gun.

Another borken cleric is the shield charging cleric. I suggest a Lirrian (sp?) and abuse the charisma feats/abilites and shield feats. Get mystisism domain. You can get obscene AC off your charisma and magic vestments. Don't forget the Shield of Command from DotF, giving you a +4 circumstance to charisma attribute itself.

Tell someone to make a character with the following idea.

Platinium Weapon [Magic of Faerun] +
Mercurial Greatsword [Sword and Fist] =
Platinium Mercurial Greatsword +
Feat "Monkey Grip [Heavy Mercurial Greatsword]" =
2d10 per hit ;p

Now you can effectively dual wield greatswords that do 2d10 a hit for only a -2 more penalty then if you were wielding two medium sized weapons. Take one level of ranger and you dont even really have to worry about feats for dual wielding. Add Sneak Attack with ring of dark hidden and thats a dead drow.
Consider the Tempest PRC in The Druid Splatbook for ultimate goodness.

Nah, the half-ogre melee cleric is a great idea. Also monkey grip that some other suggested isn't good - why not power attack for the -4 to hit? Gives more damage..

Wield the weapon two handed, cast GMW on it. Buy only +1 keen weapon with elemental damage (sonic, maybe), and then make it +4 with GMW.

Then look at all the 1 hour / level spells you can find - cast all useful spells in the morning. Then look through all the 10 min / level spells and cast them just when you arrive to an intresting location / encounter. That should make you pretty hard to kill.

For extra fun you could empower bull's strength, or empower it twice at higher levels. That should push your STR a bit higher.

EDIT: just looked at your equipment list. Not good for a cleric at all. Only +1 armor and weapons, then enchant them with the spells Greater Magic Weapon and Magic Vestment. Haste Boots are a must. Alternative to good saves are all the clarical protective spells: Death Ward, Freedom of Movement, Spell Immunity, Delay Poison, Protection from Elements x 5 etc...

um

Don't see the point of the half ogre. Your cha is going to make your character horribly weaker becuse you can't use one of your best abilities to its fullest. Turning undead. I'm not going to make any suggestions but your character is decent but nothign out of the ordinary.

I could make a human cleric with 18 str putting 2 points per lvl 8 and lowering one of your items to afford a belt of giant str +4 and have just about the same damage as your half ogre does but without the negatives of ogre and an extra feat and is a level higher. Also you could use a plane-touched earth genasi that gives 2 str and other bonus's and with the same combo be 9th level but with other nifty abilities but still with 26 str. (Has darkvision) Or another race with darkvision like h-elf(drow) or dwarf etc. Flying is a great idea also. Make that like a +2 shield of flying or something.

I could give you a few other tips but that'd spoil what happens in the adventure which is also why I know why I wouldn't make your character but thats half the fun.

I woul dthink dump Spell casting prodigy and go for Durable magic or something like that making dispelling your stuff harder.

Use peristant spell or extend spell with the karma bead for divine favor and magic vestments on you armor and shield so those don't have to be magical and same on your battle axe instead going for other magic items, make the axe keen and with a burst effect instead.

Dump Power attack for scribe scroll and have duplicates of all your stuff (buff spells) in case something is dispelled. Also look at buying scrolls of higher level spells they aren't that hard to cast.

Load up on a butt load of CLW wands and at least one of the highest cure wands you can afford now. Also consider a wand bracer which was in Dragon some months ago. Cost 4500 gp and stores three wands ina bracer slot using one chareg to put them in the bracer. Makes them always ready and leaves you a free hand. Slap it on your shield side arm.

just some ideas.
