D&D 4E Review of 4E from a Playtester

I actually think the blog is pretty interesting. I usually don't pay much attention to anything on Aint-it-Cool-News, but this writer seems to be pretty descriptive of the strengths of the new game.

The only reason I read it is because it was linked from here... otherwise, I occasionally end up on AICN when I'm looking for superhero/fantasy movie information.

I really hope that I haven't seemed to be rabidly anti-4e of late. It wasn't my intention.

Well, I fear a lot of your posts have seemed that way... But I'm willing to accept that you didn't mean for 'em to be. :)

I was just somewhat amused that the word "intuitive" was used in this preview. It was thrown around quite a bit in the early previews, and here it is again.
You know, there may be a reason that word get used so much.

Could be! Imagine that! :)

Seriously, though, what does "intuitive" really mean when you are playing a game? The only mechanic that seems intuitive to me is that rolling high is better, something that 3rd edition almost made universal. (It looks like 4e may take the extra step to make this element universal.)

But what is "intuitive" game design?

Yes, that would be the advanced version of the Paragon feat "NOT QUITE DEAD YET!"

People really shouldn't quote Monte Python on a gaming board... I mean... You're only making it worse for yourself.

But just out of curiousity.. should the Heroic feat be called "I Think I Can Pull Through" or "Message For You, Sir"?

;)

I'm about to out myself as a complete dork--not that, you know, writing for D&D hadn't already done that ;)--but I've actually got the "Message for you, Sir!" sound clip, complete with "arrow thunk," as my "new e-mail" sound file on my computer. :heh:

I'm getting this vision of a death-caused daily ability that lets your soul and animus rip from your body, smack around your killer, toss a heal to your body, then jump back in to get you on your feet again.

Assassination was never so risky. :P
