Review of the Revised Star Wars Core RPG Book

Let's also not forget that when WEG had Star Wars, it was in that slow time period between RotJ and TPM. The franchise was not worth a tenth of what it was immediately before and subsequent to Episode 1. WEG was able to crank out tons of licensed Star Wars stuff because the license was *cheap*. As soon as the license expired, and the price was adjusted for the pre-Episode 1 hype value, WEG dropped it.

I for one am thankful that *some* company is paying the licensing cost (and from what I hear, the monstrous amount of added develoment time to coordinate with LucasArts), making relatively meager profit to bring me an RPG based on this setting.

As for the whole published adventure deal, I have always taken the time to write my own stuff. That's part of my enjoyment of the hobby, so I guess I can't relate. Coming up with fresh story ideas is the hardest part, and the old WEG sources are as good as any for that. Being out of print, they can be hard to find unless you have a game store nearby that got stuck with a truckload of old WEG stuff (like I do) :D. There has got to be some good online game stores that carry 'em though.

and more power to you. but just know that there are some people out there who don't have the time to sustain a whole campaign on their own material or overhaul...errrrrrr....tweak fan material.

i really don't think that 4 adventures a year from the licenseholder is alot to ask. i can't wait to get into tempest fued, but it sure would be nice if there was something else on the horizen.

Not sure why you are so negative towards the folks who take the time to share their creations for free up on the web. I'd like to express my appreciation for them, since I know how much time it takes to write up all of that stuff and post it, just to have other people trash it.

I actually find it less time consuming to run my own stuff, since I have the entire adventure in my head and don't have to work from a book. I work out the ideas while driving to work or walking the dog, and usually just spend an hour or two before the session jotting down preparatory notes, basically outlining the session and statting the NPC's (mostly from templates). That is easily comparable to reading an adventure, and some level of original preparation is necessary regardless, since I assume your characters have their own agendas and personal histories that need to be developed outside the main story line. Since it is a scenario of my own creation, I can handle whatever the players decide to do, even if they take the story out of bounds.

From what I hear of Tempest Feud, it is massive (and good). It is the equivalent of multiple adventures and was clearly a sizeable development effort. That should take you some time to plow through, though my advice would be to intersplice some adventures of your own creation. You might find it takes up less time than you think. If Tempest Feud sells well, then WotC will likely write more adventure books like it. If not, I guess that would be some indication that most GM's write their own stuff.

I don't actually think this is true. Off hand, I can't think of any current rpg (aside from D&D) that sees a lot of adventure support, and in D&D's case most of that support comes from third party publishers.

And what is, far and away, the biggest RPG out there? D&D.

Support for Star Wars has been very disappointing, with far too much emphasis placed on sourcebooks over adventuring material. Consider that Wizards supported D&D with at least the eight "adventure path" modules, and there is also Dungeon every other month. This makes the game much easier to play for those without the time/inclination/talent to create their own stories. Star Wars has none of this.

according to some folks here, you ought to just shut up and play the fan adventures available on the internet.

and what's this talk of TIME you lazy bones! why, don't you know that i have friends who are just as good at dm'ing as they are at parenting! and they're proud of that, too! ;)

*SIGH*

Stannis...

The plain fact is that WotC is not making many adventures for Star Wars... Just like I suspect they won't make many adventures for most of their secondary games, like CoC, WoT, Spycraft, etc.
That means you have four options:
  • Make your own adventures from scratch.
  • Use free on-line Fan-written adventures.
  • Sit around complaining about the lack of official adventures.
  • Go play a different game.

It all depends on how badly you want really want to play the game, and how much time you want to devote to the endeavour.

For the record... I have a wife and two young kids. I work a rotating shift with overtime guaranteed every week. I put an awful lot of time into family and work. Even so, Gaming is one of my few ways of relaxing. I make time for it.

I make time for it in the same way some people make time to go see a football game, or go to a movie, or go to the gym, or plant a garden, or whatever... It's my hobby.

I'm not necessarily agreeing with WotC's decision. I'd love to have some official adventures to purchase... I'd save me a lot of time. I just wonder, if you aren't willing to take any of our alernative suggestions, why do you continue to complain about this at us?

Go complain to the suits at WotC. They are the ones who can do something about it, and maybe if you complain loud enough, they will.

All you can get out of us is a bunch of free fan adventures. ;)

There is this web site, I think it is called Wizards of the Coast. It has probably a dozen free Star Wars adventures on it. They seem ok. You might want to check them out. Just my 2 cents.

Gosh. You're so perfect. I guess all of us who can't measure up to the standard you've set are just a bunch of lazy bastards who don't deserve to have a quality roleplaying experience.

I feel deep shame.

well, the only reason i kept defending my point was that many people that responded here seemed to have little or no problem with it. the tone of several responses was "the fan material is good enough"...another response (erroneously) thought that d&d was the only rpg around now that got good adventure support.

but you are right in one respect, it probably does no good bitching about it here....but then again, isn't that what the internet is for - bitching about stuff you can't really change! ;)

i'll state it again for (hopefully) the last time. the current licenseholder of the star wars roleplaying game refuses to publish quality adventures (save for T-F) for that game. i think that sucks, especially considering that the previous licenseholder, with few resources, was able to be very prolific in this area. i believe that quality adventure support is necessary for a rpg to survive and thrive.

if you agree with the above statements, as it seems you might, then i don't think we've got a beef.
