Heya C,

Just wanted to say thank you for the (mildly painful) review of ENA: Whip.

Ya know, it really smarts when the biggest complaint about the product is the part you worked upon, but I guess I can console myself that there were positive comments about the artwork, and nothing negative said about editing, so two out of three of my roles were okay (unfortunately, the third was layout, sigh). But I'm glad for the criticism, because it really does mean that future products will improve considerably.
I've taken your comments into consideration, and am pleased to say that ENA: Hooked Hammer (going up for sale today) includes two versions, one printer friendly, one full-colour & bookmarked version.
I'm going to fix Whips and Two Bladed Sword over the weekend (if not today-depends on whether my contractor requires a lot of hand-holding) to lighten up the watermark on the chapter headers and create a printer-friendlier version.

Anyhoo, thanks again, keep up the good work, and don't hold any punches!

When it comes to reviews I have no friends. I ignore who I might know who worked on a project. I just review what is in front of me and then cringe afterwards as I hate to speak bad about things my friends and people I know have done. Granted my reviews are not harsh and really could be more critical, its a failing of mine. I tend to see more positives about things then negatives. I'm working on that.

Chris,

I haven't posted in this thread yet for some reason, but ever since you've started it I've been meaning to say: good work, keep up the good fight! Reviewing PDFs is a vital service to the field, and it's great that you're doing it.

It's important not to burn out, so I think you should feel OK about not reviewing everything that's submitted. (It might help to state both publically & to the publisher when & why you won't; the Creature Weeklies is a good example. It might also be possible sometimes to review a whole series at once - even if the reading time was the same, it might help to reduce your writing time).

It's also important to set quality standards for the field, so don't be afraid to be critical. As a publisher, once I set my ego aside, I appreciate the "dings" more than the praise, since it tells me what to do next time; and as a customer, I'm more inclined to trust a review that has both good and bad.

Thanks Tavis. I'm learing to pace myself as this reviewing thing is still new to me even though I've been doing it for about 2 years or so now. I can understand how setting one's ego aside is a tough thing to do. I havea good friend who writes reviews for a good sized newspaper, and once I had him offer me advice on my reviews. That was painful.

I always appriciate feedback and a thank you.

reviewing pdfs is getting to me in a wierd way. I recently borrowed a bunch of Stargate DVDs from a friend along with the main RPG book. I'm planning on reviewing the book sometime and as I was joting down notes one of them actually said "does not have book marks". Which makes sense since the book is a print book and not a PDF. :o :uhoh:

with the review site down, I'm still reviewing books so you might see the occasionally thread by me that posts a review. I'm also hoping in some way to start a discussion on some of these books, but so far that really hasn't happened. I'll link to the reviews from here.
