Were either of those things "updated" in the 5.5 PH?
No.

Wizard changes (as far as I'm aware).
-can swap cantrips after a long rest.
-level 2: expetise in an Int skill
-level 5: can prepare a spell after a short rest.

Subclass get free spells of their school instead of a discount.

Evocation: potent cantrip is level 3, sculpt spell is level 6

Abjuration 10: dispel magic as a bonus action.

Diviner and Illusionist got some wording changes, but otherwise the same.

My point is that many folks don't keep up with WotC news.
I don't because it's so spread out over various websites and social media platforms from what I gather. I just get their news from folks here. Because of this I consider myself somewhat ill-informed on exactly what the changes are in the game.

You say this as though you think it's shocking and controversial. Why would they have bothered making new books if they weren't going to change anything?

That doesn't change the fact that you can still use old content in the new ruleset.
Not my issue. My issue is that they are different but presented as the same book. Call it a revision front and center and that objection disappears.

And you follow at least one gaming news site fairly closely. How many 5e players don't do that? My guess is quite a few.

Ranger and monk were changed substantially; by WotC's own admission, ranger is practically a new class.
Ranger has been a new class 2 times already.

But yea. Those 2 got the most changes.
In short, a change log between the two PHs alone will be enormous, let alone the other corebooks. How is this not at least 5.5?
Because if 2 players sit down an play a 2014 and 2024 Wizard, it could take half the campaign before the DM knows which is which.

Maybe 2 sessions for the monk.

Even if it's a 1/4 to 1/3 of 5E playing population that pays no attention to RPG news sites I'd say that's probably significant. This is the only message board I'm on, I either deactivated the social media accounts I had or just never bothered with the others, so I'm sure there are quite a few people like me.

Right, that's why WotC is messenging like this: to make it clear that it is not a "New Edition."

But still if it wasn't for this site, I'd have no idea that video even exists. I don't subscribe to any RPG material, or any at all, on YouTube. I'm sure now that I watched that video YT will recommend or bombard me with ads for every Ginny Di video she posts for the next 10 years
