OK, I need a riddle or rhyme or some other kind of non-obvious clue.

Here is the scenario:

The setting is the "throne room" of an old mage's palace. Two pieces of the throne can be removed -- the "uprights" on the back of a throne. Instead of "balls" at the top of the uprights, they are shaped like flames. When the uprights are removed, they look like torches -- a shaft with a flame-like head.

Earlier in the adventure, the PCs will probably have found some feathers from an angel's wings. What they are supposed to do is take the feathers to two chambers. One chamber represents Hell, the other the Abyss. In each chamber is a brazier. Put/toss/drop a feather in a brazier and it will burst into flame, burning for an hour. Stick the "flame" end of the throne upright into the fire, and the upright will burn with that fire like a torch. Do this with both uprights. Take the uprights back to the throne and replace them in their slots. The throne will then sink into the floor and reveal a pit down into the mage's "Arcane Sanctuary".

On the back of the throne is engraved a clue to doing this. I created this little "system" a few months ago, and created the dungeon around it. I left the clue unmade, thinking I'd come up with something later. Well, I'm not a poet or clue writer, apparently. I havent' been able to think of anything. Can you come up with some kind of textual clue, poem, riddle, whatever that will tell the PCs what they are supposed to do? I'd love for the clue to be non-obvious until they've seen all the "parts" of it.

Can you help me?

Thanks much.

I'm also open to adjustment to actual procedure.

By angel's wings and infernal fire
The way you seek is lit
The seat of knowledge, no power is higher
is where the flames must sit

If, perchance, thine death doth cheat
But thy heart's without momentum
Enter then to thy retreat
And rest within this sanctum

Ease the pain of nature's sting
And all injustices tame
Begin first on celestial wing
Tempered by purity's flame

Two great dangers shall test thy will
In iron, sin demonic
If steadfast brave are thy still
In brass, vice diabolic

With these things thy have brought
True fire from out of stone
One last battle waits to be fought
Succeed to gain the throne

When light is brought there forth at last
Thy final hurdle hath thus been passed.

Roger

For a fantasy riddle feel:
Twin eyes of flame have I looking down upon my king,
His secrets lie safe in me till holy fire bring.
Yet no mortal flame consumes me until I have pierced
The bosoms of my evil twins by an angel birthed.

A more ancient feel:
In the time of the great [insert old leader]
The asuras of the lord appeared unto evil [insert "evil" person group]
Its face was wrath, its wings consumed by fire
"You shall spend your time in two hells, for
you have sinned against the lord [insert God name].
Only in my righteous flames your redemption lies,
yet when you find me you shall betray me,
piercing my holy flame with the spears of royalty.
And therein the earth shall tremble---" [inscription rubbed out]

Sounds fun, enjoy!:)
P.S. Some awesome responses so far!!

One thing I've used to good effect in helping players figure out what they're supposed to do is to use unusual metals. For example, perhaps the bulk of the throne is made of dark wood with golden highlights, but the left-hand "torch" is filigreed with red bronze (which is what the "hell" brazier is cast in) and the right-hand "torch" is filigreed with jet black iron (which is what the "abyss" brazier is cast in). This helps players make the connexion.

A bunch of other things aren't really correct for Early Modern English, but it at least makes basic grammatical sense with these corrections.
