Ride-By Attack protects mount?

As the feat is written, Ride-by-Attack only protects the rider from the movement related AoO. The mount is still subject to an AoO when it moves past the defender. However, in my campaign I have found that this facet of ride-by-attacks has made Mounted Combat actually useful. Without the use of ride-bys, mounts were rarely being targeted. Therefore, Mounted Combat was of almost no use.

It's not entirely clear from the wording, but I would say that since it says the character doesn't provoke an AoO, that the mount doesn't either. Otherwise that part of the feat would be pretty dumb.

Read narrowly, it would be the character only.
Read more broadly, it would the mounted character, which implies the mount as well.
It seem to me that it is pretty clear the intent is the latter. Otherwise it's just plain silly. You ride-by with such great skill and control over your mount that you avoid any AoO, but the mount still provokes one? That is just plain silliness.

I go with the strict wording.
Ride by attack protects the Rider only from AoO from his target.
This makes sense because the rider will get to make a Ride skill roll to negate an attack on his mount anyway (since he has the Mounted Combat prereq).
The only place where I differ from the core rules here is that I say that the rider is on the leading square of the mount instead of the trailing square - in other words you normally don't get the AoO on the mount before the rider gets to attack you. Visually I see the cavalryman leaning forward and downward from his mount anyway, not sitting on his horses rump.
