Rifts gets Disney and Bruckenheimer deal

I've had some of the most fun playing RPG's in the Rifts world. There are just so many options, and with some of the sourcebooks, you can have any character combos!

I remember a party of a human Ley Line Walker (Wizard), an Alien superhero, an elven Glitter Boy (Super Armored warrior with a "Boom Gun," a weapon so powerful it caused sonic booms everytime it was fired, a human Paladin, and a mutated frog Juicer.

Rifts: in 2098 a nuclear exchange in South America causes magic to come back in a big way. The Cataclysm as it is known as kills about 90% of the people on the earth and leaves everything devastated. At the same time atlantis comes back, and demons and d-bees (dimensional beings) come to Earth. There is about 200 years of darks ages as humanity learnes to survive. In the US an organization called the Coalition emerges. They are nazi like, except being pro humans. They have great tech, but disdain magic.

So, think apocolyptic world where magic, psionics, and high tech all exist as do atlantians, gods, demons, and a thousand different none human races.

Sounds cool...
But i hate tech worlds...

I'd love to see it, but chances are it will never be made. At most one in every hundred ideas that are optioned are actually made into movies. Movie studios tend to pick up options like gamers pick up RPG books.

At the very least, though, it's some option money in Palladium's pocket, even if nothing else comes of it. That's at least 5 figures (and more likely six) that Palladium wouldn't otherwise have had.

In this industry, that's a fairly major cash infusion.

Actually, one of the concepts of the game was that there were large no-man's-lands in between settlements and countries, so you could have one area, such as England, with nothing but magic, and wander down into mainland Europe with the New German Republic and their supertech mechanized armies. Even in North America, there is a vast difference between the Coalition and its neighbors in regards to technology and familiarity with magic.

It was a fun game (my drug of choice for almost ten years), and I loved the setting, but once 3E came out it underscored for me how truly crappy the system was.

I guess a movie could be cool, though, as there's no wonky munchkin game mechanics in a film. I have to concede that it was a good system for over-the-top, cinematic action. I want to see some realistic-looking Dog Boys! I hope they can throw in Cyber-Knights too without making them look too much like Jedi rip-offs.

Maybe it will go for a Mad Max-esque approach. I personally don't like fantasy intermixed with tech scifi, and I'm not sure how good something like that could be done on the screen (wizards versus battle armor sergents)

Its about time this was announced. I first heard about it back in 1999 or 2000 or something when I got together with Kevin & Maryann and its been hard keeping my mouth shut. :)

I originally heard that Ridley Scott was interested in directing, and that he was a big fan of the Juicer OCC. I seem to recall it came to his attention when his nephew was playing the game. Hopefully it works out for them, they've been working on the deal for a long, long time.

I think the thing will be what do they decide to show. The Rifts setting is too encompassing. There are too many stories to be told. Too many locations that could be visited. Too many heroes and too many villains.

Settings I would love to see in the movie:
Atlantis
Lone Star complex for all the mutants

Characters I would love to see:
Juicers!
Crazies!!
Full Conversion Cyborgs!!!
And of course some mages

Villains I would love to see:
Splugorth
Dragons
Skelebots

I hope the CG budget is there for this movie. I don't see how any less than about 90% of the movie would be pure CG.
