RIFTS movie confirmed

Yeah it is a little bit old for news but considering the d20 focus of this site I didn't know if everyone had heard. Jerry Bruckheimer of Top Gun and The Rock fame is taking the helm for a RIFTS movie and has hired David Franzoni as his writer (he wrote the screenplay for Gladiator). I haven't played RIFTS in a while but I'll be damned if I'm not the first person in line to see this movie.

Confirmation from JB himself (scroll down to the bottom)

Official Press Release from Palladium

Oh yeah, I'm sure this will be moved to the OT forum. The site was running so slow that the OT forum wouldn't come up. Time to make the Mods earn their keep. :D

I'm on the fence about this one. I do love Rifts and have been a fan of it for like 15 years. But there is just so much there, that I fear the screenplay may be bogged down with useless detail just becasue the writer could. And if they don't have a Splurgoth Slaver and his slave barge with the blind warrior women, I'm going be highly upset. :D

Hollywood is big into rewriting. I can't imagine they'd let a sci-fi movie get bogged down into detail. This is the same industry that cut the plot from the D&D movie (I'm not kidding, that bit where Ridley and Marina get sucked into the scroll? They get the plot and motivation from in there. The inside-the-scroll-scene was cut from the release. I guess they thought it might make for a lousy movie.)

I look forward to any movie based in RPG gaming. Any movie at all. I'm a tool like that. Best of luck to the RIFTS crowd.

Come on... the screenwriter is the same guy from Gladiator and THAT was a great movie. I'm going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

There had better be a Glitterboy and some SAMAS or I will be very disappointed.

Should be a simple film to write: just get someone to write an script, then another one who says it isn't big enough, then another one to add even more, and another one to add even more, etc. By the end of the rewrites the character from the original script who was the most powerful figure of all time will serve well as the lackey to the lastest character...

Okay, I have Rifts problems. I am in therapy for it... :(

I've heard of RIFTS, but I don't know what it is. Care to enlighten me?

RIFTS is a post-apocolyptic RPG, by Palladium books. Basically, there are ley lines, and when people die, energy goes to them. Usually they are invisible. But then there was this huge war where massive amounts of people died. The ley lines were flooded with energy, and ripped open. The places where the ley lines met became highly unstable, and created rifts (thus the name) to other worlds, and all kinds of crazy things started coming through. Its a pretty good system, char char generation is a bit crazy. I like the SDC and HP thing, though, thats nice. You can take light amounts of damage before it REALLY starts to hurt you, which is registered on the SDC (Structural Damage Capacity). Some things cut right through and peg your HP, though. Ow.

Though if you're dealing in SDC, you're barely in RIFTS. The MDC kluge was specifically added for the sake of RIFTS.

Though the setting is real neat. To get a picture of wast RIFTS amounts to, you know how GURPS is the system which is supposed to be able to handle any genre? Well RIFTS is the setting in which every genre is put in a pot and stirred. You have sci fi suits of powered armor battling alongside superheroes against gods and dragons. Throw in a couple of runeblades, and things get interesting. Pretty much anything from any Palladium game is convertable to the setting (hence the multiple conversion books).

Though just so you know, RIFTS is the furthest thing from balance imaginable.
