Rifts -- Who's played it?

Palaner

First Post
I have suddenly found myself anticipating the Ultimate Edition of Rifts that is supposed to come out August 15th. Can you tell me your thoughts on the game, and if I should get it?

I played this a couple times a decade or two ago.

I found Rifts to be the ultimate "all that 'n' a bowl o' grits" setting going -- if you wanted some odd combination character class (or group of character classes and weapons, etc.), you could find a supplement to support it. As such, it was hard to avoid weird power creep. Charcters simply using the core book would never be as powerful as characters made with later supplements... :(

Rules are suck.

D20 is a direct rip-off of the Paladium rule set, so I guess you don't like D20 rules either then

BTW...RIFTS is great, I enjoy it as much if not more so than D&D, which i know is considered blasphemy on this msg board. :D

Setting is good, and the rules do suck (big time!) Having play in the shadow of Kevin at U OF WINDSOR, and logged in more time than I care to mention with Rifts - I can honestly say that the game (no matter what version they decide to come out with - can you say cash grab?) sucks! Believe me, it is worth the time to convert a RIFTS setting to the system of your choosing (D20 is ok, GURPS not bad, Cyberpunk2020 is best but need to add magic - not hard).

The ultimate game if that is what you are interested in, is combine the best of several products (Omega World from Polyhedron, old Gamma World - not the Arthaus version, Darwins World - a go0od and interesting game, etc etc) ands combine that with Rifts. That would give you unlimited potential, and a better system to play in.

Just my 5 cents.

I liked Rifts quite a bit when it was just the main rulebook. Once they started the power inflation in various sourcebooks, it got pretty hard to play without major rebalancing. I don't know if they ever did that, or plan to do that in the new edition.

Very cool setting, though, and a lot of neat ideas.

Excuse me??? The "Paladium rule set" is a direct rip off of D&D - Paladium was even sued over it. The D20 system is not a rip off of Paladium, other than the fact that Paladium uses a 20-sided die in rolling for combat hits. Other than that, there are many many differences. Most of the mechanics are much smoother and less cluttered. I offer up the skill system as exhibit number 1, followed closely by the save throw rules (exhibit 2) and there's more (I just don't think I need to flog a dead horse).

I'll tell you what... I f you like RIFTS, thats cool - I don't have a problem with that and its not blasphemy. But, knowing both the D20 system and the Paladium system as well as I do, it IS blasphemy to that the former is a rip-off of the latter - and I will call you on it every time.
They aren't even close.

Nope, not even a close rip off. THe palladium rules have many problems, actually more then d20. People complain about power increase in d20 but it pales in comparison to Palladium. They rewrote the worldf and many things they said they contradict; that's both in setting and in the rules.
