Can you provide the source for this? I believe we've been allowing a Bard to use the ring to rest only 2 hours and memorize:

Sustenance: This ring continually provides its wearer with life-sustaining nourishment. The ring also refreshes the body and mind, so that its wearer needs only sleep 2 hours per day to gain the benefit of 8 hours of sleep. The ring must be worn for a full week before it begins to work. If it is removed, the owner must wear it for another week to reattune it to himself.

Faint conjuration; CL 5th; Forge Ring, create food and water; Price 2,500 gp.

Sleep and rest are seperate.

An elf only needs 4 hours of sleep-equivalent a night, but still needs 8 hours of rest to recover their spells.

Someone with a ring of sustenance only needs 2 hours of sleep a night, but still needs 8 hours of rest to recover their spells.

Outsiders don't need sleep at all, but still need 8 hours of rest to recover their spells.

The way I explain it, preparing spells creates constructs (no, I don't mean golems) in your mind. When you cast those spells, those constructs get mostly used up, but a "husk" remains. Before you can prepare more spells, you need to purge the husks, which takes about 8 hours. Creatures who sleep do this automatically, other creatures learn methods of doing so at the same time they learn to cast spells.

I am considering reducing the rest requirement to 4 hours instead, as that would make "doesn't need sleep" more of an advantage for wizards. Plus, it would make elven wizards more desirable - it's not like the elf's abilities help them become good wizards the way a dwarf's abilities help them become a good fighter or a halfling's abilities help them become a good rogue.
