Rituals - A wizard can Raise Dead?

Rituals = Bookshelves

Once upon a time only carpenters could build them. Then someone had the clever idea to box up the parts with instructions. So, now all it takes is those instructions (the ritual), the components, and the knowledge of how to use tools (Ritual Caster feat).

Some may come partially pre-assembled. (Scrolls)

My only real problem with rituals is that many of them do not require any sort of skill check to determine their efficacy. In which case, why tie them to any skill at all? I would have liked to see them take the scaling of rituals based on skills a little further than they did.

So that you have to perchase the right components for the job. You don't just plunk down x gp and call it a day, you plunk down x gp of components, which are themselves divided into 5 different types, + residuum which is gotten through Disenchantment.

So, if you want to cast Tenser's Floating Disc, and you've used up all your Arcana stuff on Linked Portal, you're SOL no matter how many herbs you have for your Nature rituals... unless you've got some Residuum handy.

It's a clever little resource management thing that can go unnoticed or used.

I think at the very least I am going to house rule that you have to be *trained* in the skill that a ritual is based on in order to use it. That way you can just have a warrior with no Arcana training doing a scrying ritual. That just doesn't seem right to me.

Thanks for the discussion. I feel a *bit* better about the lack of division in rituals now.

But he does have training in rituals themselves. So, what's the problem? He's got an easy to read do-it-yourself instruction manual and the feat that allows him to read it.

And since he doesn't have Arcana training, he must at least instead have Religion training, which includes an understanding of the magic and such from there.

Unless it's a scroll, in which case, some Wizard already did the hard parts for him.

Why is this the case? From what I understand I could have neither Arcana nor Religion training, purchase the Ritual Caster feat, and cast anything I want. Am I missing something?

You're missing that the Ritual Caster feat has a prerequisite.

Ritual Caster feat has as its prerequisite training in Arcana or Religion.

If you want to have fun, 1st edition style, with this, find your old Reincarnation table (or make a new, amusing one). Set a DC for Raise Dead and on a fail...."well, the good news is, you now get to have a lair, and treasure, and a minion."

To purchase the Ritual Caster feat, you need "Prerequisite: Trained in Arcana or Religion".

I really think its just fine.

Say you have a group of three players, all excited about Martial Power. They select a Tactical Warlord as their leader, fighter as their defender, and also have a rogue as their striker.

They may quite possibly be hosed without a "traditional" cleric if access to key rituals such as Raise Dead or Remove Affliction is restricted. As is, one of the characters will need to spend two feats to get access to them -- probably the TacLord picking up Arcana, as it might actually be useful. Why make it more painful than it is and require spending a feat on Religion, too? I think its a feature that you don't need a cleric in every party, not a bug.
