I thought it was interesting that the REH Inner Circle was discussing whether or not REH used drugs, and Rusty Burke, a renowned REH expert, with a lot of published works in regards to Howard studies, says it is unlikely. Howard's letters and writings indicate that he believed the prevailing propaganda of the time that marijuana was both highly addictive (on the order of heroin, opium or cocaine), made people violent and could be enslaved by simple consumption. Howard's knowledge of marijuana appears to come from literary sources and propaganda of the time. According to L. Sprague de Camp, Howard did drink a lot, but he rarely got drunk and he never smoked.
