ROBOTECH RPG - its back, and its new

What do you mean?

I think he means that it's not really much of an update. There was a lot of discussion on this over at RPGNet following some very suspect reviews back in April (yes, I still read the reviews). Apparently the new rulebook is just the old Robotech system with some cosmetic changes and it doesn't actually contain any rules that you would need to recreate the Shadow Chronicles series (making it a fairly poor Shadow Chronicles RPG).

To me, the mega damage rules actually worked well in Robotech. The somewhat limited (compared to RIFTS) proliferation of variant mecha, and the presumed presence of military organizations to better regulate access to the powerful gear just allowed me to regulate things better than in RIFTS.

I'd prefer the new material be as compatible with the old as possible.

It worked for Traveller back in the day, but I'd prefer to have the books line up nicely on the shelf with my older Robotech stuff.

Well, Palladium, like some other smaller publishers, knows its role as a niche publisher. The continued popularity of Anime and the presumed compatibility with RIFTS and other Palladium games should allow it to have moderate success. It won't compete with D&D, but really, what does?

These days though, to be honest, I'd be tempted to buy the book and convert it to Heavy Gear to actually play it.

I will have to agree with you. Although I fell out of playing the Palladium system, I found it worked really well with Robotech. The MDC wasn't a bad idea and especially the "by location" part. Yes it was a lot of number crunching and bookkeeping, but seriously it wasn't bad.

Glad to see it back with someone who knows how to treat it right. Won't buy the book, but it's good to see it back at Palladium.

I've played Robotech more than once and enjoyed it.

I have nothing in particular against Palladium, I've met Kevin and had pleasant conversations with him.

But given what I know of Kevin and Palladiums track record... I doubt there will be any great difference between the old Robotech game and the new one. Their motto seems to be "Never type when you can cut and paste."

And the chibi format? ... Yeah...

Robotech RPG? Could be interesting but it's highly unlikely that it will be released anytime soon. Plus it's attached to one of the most clunky nonstreamlined rules systems that I've ever seen. Which means assuming I did get it I'd have to convert it to something that is not like pulling teeth so that new people can figure it out and has a semblance of internal consistency to it.

The new Robotech game has been out for several weeks (at least) by now. I say if new people can figure out 3.5 or 4th edition, they can figure out Palladium.

And if they can't, they can just make it up as they go along and nobody will be the wiser ;)

Has anyone gotten the Robotech book yet? Is there Mega Damage?

I don't have the game, though I am led to believe by reviewers that, yes, it does include the old rules for MD.
