Rocks as Weapons

What are the Stats for using rocks as weapons? I can't see anything in the PHB or DMG. The closest I see is in the description of giants. Anyone know what damage and stats various sized rocks should have if thrown or used to pummel someone?

Also how do you handle other improvised weapons, such as throwing a chair or something?

First, look to the rules on improvised weapons:

Improvised Weapons
Sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat. Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses one in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a -4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object. To determine the size category and appropriate damage for an improvised weapon, compare its relative size and damage potential to the weapon list to find a reasonable match. An improvised weapon scores a threat on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. An improvised thrown weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.
For a rock, I'd start with sling damage: 1d4 (medium), and then drop it a die category to 1d3 (medium). For a chair, I think a club works as a general, all-purpose weapon, so 1d6 (medium). Adjust slightly for big or lighter chairs, or chairs made out of non-wooden materials.

I don't recall exactly where I saw it, but I know that all improvised weapons (such as bottles, chairs, rocks, etc.) are -4 attack, 1d3 damage, 10 foot range increment.

Ok Thanks.

So lets say that a rock would do the following damage based on size:

(Small) 1d2, weight=2 pound
(Medium) 1d3, weight=4 pound
(Large) 1d4, weight=8 pounds

How does that sound? Not sure that the weights are right though.

Pretty much. Unless your size Large(or powerful build) and have Rock Throwing, in which case your doing 2d6 damage throwing 40 lb rocks. ;)

the back of Comp. Warrior has a weight-chart for improvised weapons. One of my favorite weapons so far was a jail cell door that did 2d6 damage. While I was under a -4 for using it, I must have rolled more twenties using it then any other weapon in that campaign. Of course that was also the campaign where our gnome wizard successfully pulled off a called shot to the nuts with an elbow drop.

personally, I think a rock should be a simple weapon, not imporovised, in terms of proficiencies. Seems a wee bit sureal that its easier to throw a knife than a rock effectively in combat.
