Rodney Thompson on Magic Items

I am betting that some of the fluff of spells will be left to the reader and the spells will focus more on mechanics.

For instance you get a flame type spell at 1st level that deals 1d6 damage. At 2nd level this spell is now second level and deals 3d6 damage, what it looks like is up to you.

I'm hoping that spells won’t have levels at all, so spells will have a level equal to your caster level.

So if you cast a fireball as a 1st level magic-user, it will be considered a 1st level spell, but if you cast it at 19th level, it is a 19th level spell (with greater effects etc).

God I hope not. I don't want to roll 20d6 EVER AGAIN. (not even 6d6 while we are at it). I'm ok with the following compromise: Fireball (for example) deals 5d6 damage + 1 per level.

More than 5 dice (arbitrary number) = not fun.

That would be so sweet!

Now that is an interesting idea, thought I'm not sure the damage is scaling properly.

WOW!! Wizards will now be able to cast 25th level spells!

Does that mean the old 9th level spells are now 25th, or have they gone 16 levels past the old 9th level spells?

My guess for the new level limits is that the new range of character level 1-30 is about the same as the old levels 1-20. So on level 30, you're not what 3e calls epic.

Spell levels will be stretched to be the same as character levels: So a 12th-level wizard can cast 12th-level spells Old 9th-level spells will be new 25th-level spells. That has the advantage of giving you new choices for spells every level and make it all less bumpy.

That's what you think! :p

I like rolling lots of dice.

Of course, If they can make it work with less dice, I'm okay with it, too.

There was talk (I will try to find some links) of 3.0 spells going from 1-20 to introduce more granularity, and then it was decided not to do that.

So I am guessing it is something like that. With some new superpowered stuff at the top.

ALSO: to the OP: I recomend putting "25th level spells" in the title of the thread.
