Rogue Caster Class

Walken

First Post
I'm looking for a PrC that'll grant my rogue arcane spells. I love how the Spellthief is set up for this but I don't want the class abilities. I'd go for Temple Raider but I don't want divine spells. Most of the PrCs I can find are a little rogue and mostly caster(Daggerspell Mage, Arcane Trickster), I want as much rogue as I can cram in with some caster. Ability to cast level 4 spells would be sweet (like ranger/paladin progression.) Anybody know where I could find something like this?

Well... Welcome both or you!

And to answer your question... maybe not using a PrC is the best way to go. Maybe progress 2 or 3 levels of Rogue and then 1 level of wizard... etc.

There's always Spellthief.

"I love how the Spellthief is set up for this but I don't want the class abilities." Looked pretty clear to me that he already considered and rejected this idea.

Here is the list of Arcane Rogues from the 3.5 Rogue Optimization thread over at WOTC:

If you are going outside of WOTC sources, I think the Mage Blade from Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved might be what you are looking for.

Duskblade is a bit rogue-like (from PHB II).

I'll second that. Unless you build a character with the intention to go into a prestige class for some specific ability, I'm not a huge fan of them. A 60/40 rogue wizard is as good as most of them. (You would have multiclass penalty considerations with most of the prestige class prerequisites of existing casting anyway, so hopefully you are human, halfling, or elf.)

If all you want is 4th level spells (by 15th or 20th level presumably), I'd stick with pure rogue and use magic device, by 11th level you have enough ranks to always suceed and/or take the rogue special ability to take 10 under duress and apply it to UMD. By 15th level scrolls of up to 3rd level are afordable, by 20th 4th level scrolls are within reason. Plus you won't be restricted to arcane scrolls.

You could also consider a casting cohort, and maybe a ring or two of spell storing. The cohort could hide in combat (fly/invisible) and cast friendly spells like haste, heroism, enlarge person and so on.

There are actually some feats that grant you a single 1st-level spell and a couple of cantrips x/day. I know there are some in Libris Mortis but I'm sure they're in other sources as well.

Complete Arcane has a few... not really worth a feat slot IMHO though.
