Rogue PrCs

Ulrik

First Post
Hi! I'm finally going to join a campaign again, after not having played D&D for more than a year! The campaign is using Eberron.

The group lacks a Rogue, so I'm going to play one that uses TWF/sneak attack for combat. (Probably a halfling, unless someone can come up with something better?) However, the DM told me that I should plan out character advancement when I create the character, and should probably plan to take one (or more!) prestige classes, or else my character will be a poor cousin to the rest of the party. (This is obviously more of a roll-playing campaign, which is fine by me and not that surprising considering that these guys (and I!) are mostly board gamers.)

So, what PrCs for Rogues exist? And which are a good choice if I want to keep my sneak attack maxed out? (Or use lots of 1st lvls to get it even higher! :P)

And finally, are Eberron adventures more city-focused than "normal" D&D, or can it be anything? (I'd like to know what kind of adventures where going to play before I pick skills...)

Complete Adventurer has several, and some work well with different concepts. Dread Pirate I can think off of the top of my head is a lot of fun, but only for a sea-fairing game (Skyship game?)

Shadowdancer is a good one for a rogue.

Invisable Blade (Complete Warrior I think) is good for a fighitng rogue who wants to feign and use daggers, though it's got some entry issues (The feats were screwed up, but there's a corected 10 level PrC by the author out there somewhere, do a web search).

Arcane Trickster can be fun for a Mage/Rogue. Gets most of your sneak attack, and full casting to boot.

Assasin has sneak attack and works well with the rogue.

In Eberron, the Dragonmarked Heir could be cool if you make an Elf with the Mark of Shadow.

Races of Eberron's Cabinate Trickster is fun for an infiltrator. Also check out the Changeling Racial substitution levels (Can be quite fun), though you loose trap finding and/or trapsense.

Dualist is good if you don't do the TWF, since you need to keep one hand open for the canny defense, though you can always choose to not use that abilitiy.

That's all I can think of for now, it realy depends on your total concept.

The PrCs in the Eberron book are neat too. Look through there and the Complete Adventurer, and possibly the Complete Warrior. There are too many options, I think.

My vote is for assassin. Use two short swords or whatever, and get two gloves of storing. That way you can not only draw them as a free action without quick draw, you can also stow away one weapon, use the free hand to cast a spell, and get it back without wasing actions on handling the weapon.

Complete Adventurer has a lot of nice spells for assassins, usually casting as a swift action and lasting one round. We have one to get more SA damage, one to resolve attacks as touch attacks, one distract a foe, rendering him flat-footed.

If you can convince your DM that a wand of a spell with casting time 1 swift action should be a swift action, too, you can let someone create one wand each of grave strike, vine strike and golem strike, so you can sneak attack undead, plants and constructs. Activate those via Use Magic Device.

And yes, I'm playing a character like that right now.

Yes, Whisper Gnomes are kinda insane. ;)

If you don't need to be a full-scale rogue, a rogue/fighter/tempest could work well enough.

If your group is goodly aligned, one option might be Vigilante. It's certainly pretty sweet AND works very well in cities.

Ninja Spy

Vraister & Thanee got it right. Whisper gnome all the way. Darkvision. Small sized. 30 foot movement. Racial bonuses to rogue stuff.

Check out Ninja Spy from Oriental Adventures. I recommend a mix of 1 ranger/x rogue/few Ninja Spy/few assasin. Ninja Spy gives you Hide in Plain Sight, Acrobatics, and a slew of other neat abilities. The one level of ranger allows you to Track, something every party needs. High level rogues get all the neat abilities like Opportunist & Crippling Strike (combine that with a Wounding Weapon, especially two of them!) Assasin if you want some neat spells and have a good Int for Death Attack.
