Roleplaying XP

What types of xp rewards are appropriate for non-combat encounters. I am running a campaign where there is a lot of espionage, diplomacy and tactical movements by the PCs and they are reaching mid-levels where they will very slowly advance in level based on a pure combat xp system. What type of alternative xp reward system does anyone else use?

Thanks for any insight anyone can offer!

I only give half xp for monsters, but I give each pc 25 xp per level per game in four categories: race, class, alignment, and personal. I find that advancement is still quite fast.

Give these things CRs

eg Diplomacy = use to convince Duke to give a particular Licence to the PCs. The Duke is a Level 12 Aristocrat = CR 11

Espionage = sneak in to the Theives Guild and plant incriminating evidence (calculate an average CR based on the level of its occupants and security systems (ie Traps)
