Heh - that's why you play 'em with friends instead!
Yes, the AI is particularily insane... I've never seen AI generals charging into the fray, and dying, with such regularity.
Never trust the "auto-resolve combat", unless it's not really important (like rebels). I can usually defeat an AI army with 1:2 odds. Once, even 1:4 because the AI had reinforcements, but omitted to bring them into the battle until the first army was mostly routed.... Big mistake...
I've recently rediscovered RTW by installing the Rome: Total Realism mod, which aims to make the armies and factions more in-line with history, and makes combat more realistic and harder (cavalry is no longer über).
You can get it here. Huge download, but well worth it.
