In this 7-page PDF Philip Reed provides DMs with twelve new hazards designed for use in urban environments. Unlike prior releases in this series, A Dozen Hazards of the Cityhttp://enworld.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=20742 limits the more traditional hazards -- molds, slimes, and fogs -- to only five entries and uses the bulk of the PDF to offer unusual hazards that provide abstract rules for handling things like funeral processions and press gangs.

The hazards in this PDF are:

  • Falling Refuse.
  • Funeral Procession.
  • Loose Sewer Cover.
  • Overflowing Drainage Ditches.
  • Press Gang Surprise.
  • Runaway Coach.
  • Swarm of Thieves.
  • Bather's Mold.
  • Merchant's Mold.
  • Razorvines.
  • Septic Slime.
  • Sewage Fog.

Ooh. Good call.

Any chance of more urban releases?

It's possible. This was my first release in the series since April (but I had fun writing it so maybe I'll get inspired again soon).

Hmm, a few urban hazards of record that seem to have been missed - Food poisoning and diseases from bad drains. And my personal favorite - toxic dust. (Mud in the city streets was largely manure of one type or another. As carriages passed over it the muck would be ground fine. On a summer day it would dry up and, when disturbed by passing coaches, people, and horses, be thrown up to linger in the air and be taken in with each breath. Lovely stuff.)

One thing that I found disturbing while writing a school report about Elizabethean London (many years agone now) was that people died there faster than they were born, the city grew because people migrated there, not because of birth rate.

In any event, this PDF is one that I am purchasing. :)

This one was covered in the overflowing drainage ditches.

But the others are good ones, maybe Phil will snap them up into A Dozen More Hazards of the City.

I was thinking more of the typhoid and cholera epidemics that struck London in the 1800s - they were lacking one major piece of plumbing, the water trap.

Bad milk is another, people forget why Pasteurized milk is so important. Consumption was greatly to be feared, and for those who could afford it asses milk was preferred over cows milk for that reason.

We'll have to wait and see how this does. Releasing the PDF reminded me why it had been so long since my last d20 fantasy product.

Man just when I though I was done buying rpg stuff this month., you come along and take advantage of my addiction! Please sir quit releasing such good material! The very least you could do is release some really crappy stuff so I can get caught up on the stuff I already have! :)

Seriously though I really enjoy this line of products (your other products rock too) and so do my gamers.

Thanks,

Gil

Hmmm, too general - you could spin out at least a dozen crappy products!

A Dozen Crappy Magic Items
A Dozen Crappy Weapons
A Dozen Crappy Helms
A Dozen Crappy Horses....

The Auld Grump, just trying to be helpful.... :p
