I'm not sure how many Bret has planned but if he does 50 I'll be forced to collect them into a limited hardcover.

We should be able to make 50 without difficulty. Although by then the spells will be less "quintessential" than these early ones. I plan on producing these as long as people continue to enjoy them.

Speaking of variants, here's a few from Mythus Magick:

Fireknives Charm
Forcedart Charm
Heka Darts Charm
Icearrows Charm
Silver Spears Charm
Thornspear Cantrip

Please note that with the exception of Heka Darts Charm the above castings are each the equivalent of 2nd level. Heka Darts Charm is equivalent to 3rd level. That said, I hope they inspire people to do their own Magic Missile variants.
