Sometimes things depend on who's writing. I believe Michael and Philip switch off writing duties on a week by week basis. I enjoy both writers work but I think they approach it in different ways.
I think Philip says, "What do I want to write today?"
I think Michael says, "What do I want to write this week?"
I believe Michael will pick a theme and develop 5 items on it. This robot colllection seems like seems like Michaels. The varient rule seems to be a tip off as well because many of Michaels d20 Future works had "disagreements" with the Future SRD. I believe Philips work tends to be all over the place, (I would suggest the hazard was Phils work because he like hazards)
We see similar things in the DM Pipeline as well as any month we will seem a couple of themes a month. Overall though their is usually a lot of variation by the end of a month.
If there is something you like or don't like contact Philip directly about it. Members of the DM Pipeline are regularly polled for input and it helps shape the product.
