Round III is OVER

While I am finding this thread to be now useless for its stated purpose, it's very illiuminating to see how other groups play and don't use the RAW. The only reason players are not taking these feats is becasuse their DMs are clearly running a campaigns where the important advantages/disadvantages these things are meant to overcome or confer play no role.

These threads have lots of purposes, not least of which is a bit of fun (which as we all know is the be all and end all at the roleplaying table. Let us all slavishly bow at the Altar of Fun. However, I think it is also fulfilling it's other purposes, ostensibly to find the least unpopular of the feats, but also to see how people use and feel about the Feats.

Oh, and this round is over. Next round up in a few minutes.

Spell Mastery.
Sure, it's remotely useful... in theory...
but it's almost always, unless you're playing a weird campaign where you get captured/stripped a lot, completely useless.

So, the DM makes the feat useless and that's the reason you don't like the feat? :\

No, I think he's saying that most DMs assume that PC wizards have the necessary components around, unless they are high GP cost components. Rather than be tight-waddish ("You're out of cricket legs, what do you do?") they just assume PC wizards are always gathering spell components. Rather than make the Feat useless, these DMs are ditching one tedious aspect of the game to focus on other, cooler things.

Don't Sweat The Small Stuff In DnD. Good book. And it doesn't contain Eschew Materials the Feat.

Actually, the (nonmagical very cheap equipment) spell component pouch basically says that as long as the caster's got that they're golden. So all Eschew Materials does is replace a 5 gold-piece item available everywhere. :\ It's not really a DM's decision not to sweat the small stuff in this particular case, it's right there in the RAW.

I haven't been voting for Eschew Materials only because the idea is cool and salvageable and doesn't annoy me at the sight of it. With some kind of clause to use hp or XP instead of expensive material components it might be okay. Or maybe rename it "Material Component Master" or somesuch and have it grant a bonus to using power components or something. That would be snazzy.
