RPG books in ordinary bookstores?

PenguinKing

First Post
Lately, I've been noticing RPG books showing up in ordinary, everyday bookstores - Coles, Smith, Chapters, stuff like that. I don't mean Forgotten Realms novels, either - I came across a copy of "Masters of the Wild" stuffed in with the crossword puzzles in one, and another actually had the "Wheel of Time d20" core book on display.

Have you noticed any of that in your area?

- Sir Bob.

P.S. Nih!

All of the major bookstores in my area (Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks, etc.) have a small RPG section. It's usually right next to the Fantasy/Sci-Fi novels section.

They tend to have more 2nd Edition than 3rd Edition stuff, though. Probably old stock left from 2e's days. Still, you are able to find some new things there, even when other places are sold out (like Masters of the Wild.)

In my area near Detroit the ordinary bookstores like Borders, waldenbooks B Dalten etc have always carrried WoTC and WW stuff otherwise good luck finding it at ordinary book stores but some of them will order it for you.

I personally prefer to support my game store even with these things because to manyof them have gone out of buisness and I don't wanna lose the one I have now.

I know that Borders has been carrying RPG books for a while now... B&N and Waldenbooks also carry them here... Mostly D&D 3E, Star Wars & WW stuff.

I know that Chapters and McNaly Robinson Booksellers have been selling RPG material ever since the initial outbreak of 3e, at the least. I've actually purchased some things from them, as they occationally had things in before the one good game store back in Winnipeg; plus that 10% chapters club discount ain't anything to sneeze at...

Side note: If anyone knows of a good hobby store in Edmonton, please let me know -- I'm fairly new to the city...

Chapters has been selling bits and pieces of RPG material for some time. I bought a softcover 1st edition EarthDawn at one about 2 years ago. They currently carry a decent range of WoTC produced d20 stuff, from 3e to Star Wars to WoT. I have no idea if it sells well though.

Hastings, has carried RPG books for years, Only the stuff from WOTC and White Wolf of course, and the selection is kinda funky, but they definattly seem to get the magazines in quick, I picked up Dragon, 294 yesterday there.

The bookstores here in Edmonton have carried 3e stuff since its beginning. They are actually sometiems even cheaper as they don't raise the MSRP because of the damn canadian dollar. I know a few gamers that buy ALL their supplies at Chapters. They order them in for them and get them in on the release date - and then get a 10% discount for being a member.

As to the member looking for gaming stores in Edmonton - here goes. There are really only a few gaming stores in Edmonton (all owned by the same people). Warp 1 on Whyte Ave is, i my opinion, the best. HUGE selection and cheaper than their partner Warp 2. Plus a couple of the girls their are hot! Warp 2 is on 97th street and about 130th ave. It has a nice selection but on average a dollar more for books. If you are looking for older stuff, used material, toys, or just a new place to look - try Whyte Knight, also on Whyte avenue. A little hard to find, you gotta go up all those stairs, its pretty neat inside adn you can find great deals. Why he doesn't sell his 2e stuff on ebay i'll never know. I got the A series of modules for under $20 canadian!!! There is also Mission Games in St. Albert but thats run out of soemones' home. Never been there but the pics on the internet look cool. Thats about it.

Borders around here has them... generaly a lot of whitewolf, 3E stuff, some few oddballs... a rather varied selection...

Walden Books (Actualy I think it has a different name now, but it's the same store) also has them, and basicly the same selection as borders, though they generaly also have some 2E stuff.

Horizon Books carries a FEW, now and then, but not commonly.

On Cue, a branch of Suncoast that sells books as well as music/movies, normaly has a few, with again a similar selection (Generaly more whitewolf than anything else, though).

I must be lucky for at the Waldens by me one of the asst. managers is a gamer. He always makes sure the game section is full to capacity with all the new stuff. Even some of the lesser known D20 companies are there.
