RPG Crowdfunding News – Cloud Empress, Elfland, Curse of Camelot, and more

This week’s list of projects ends between February 7 and 14. You’ll find options for Mothership, DCC, 5e, MÖRK BORG, and more. This is just a sampling of what’s available via a variety of crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, Backerkit, GameFound, IndieGoGo, ItchFunding, GameOnTabletop, and more.

Cloud Empress- Ecological Science Fantasy Roleplaying.jpg

Cloud Empress: Ecological Science Fantasy Roleplaying from worlds by watt
  • END DATE: Thu, February 9 2023 4:00 PM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): Mothership
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $58 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of both books, five pamphlets, two postcards, a map, and a patch
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Mothership meets anime-inspired fantasy in this new rulebook. Cloud Empress takes cues from Nausicaä in the Valley of the Wind, an environmental sci-fi anime from Hayao Miyazaki, Frank Hubert’s Dune, and Hiromu Arakawa’s Full Metal Alchemist. Combining Mothership rules with ecological science fantasy, you’ll play as heroes trying to make the best of a failed far-future dominated by small warring clans and giant deadly bugs. If Mothership and Nausicaä speak to you, there’s a link to the WIP rules on the campaign page.

Elfland: Beyond The Fields We Know (DCC RPG) from Dragon Peak Publishing
  • END DATE: Tue, February 7 2023 10:10 AM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeon Crawl Classics
  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $15 for all three PDFs
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This 48-page RPG zine gives you two DCC adventures set in Elfland, the domain of the fey. One of the adventures is “Christopher Robin's Nightmare,” a level-2 rump through the Hundred Acre Wood of Winnie-the-Pooh fame, though it’s darker and weirder than A.A. Milne’s classic novel. The other adventure takes inspiration from Beauty and the Beast. In this version, Beauty never returned, the Beast never was restored, and there’s fallout that includes nods to Hellraiser (1987) and Resident Evil 1's Spencer Mansion. With a pamphlet funnel included, this is a good jumping on point for some fey related adventures using the DCC system.

Curse of Camelot from EBC Publishing
  • END DATE: Thu, February 9 2023 11:09 AM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $13 for the PDF of the book, the digital maps, and VTT files
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This has potential. It’s a d6 based OSR that presents Arthurian legends with a twist: What if the Knights of the Round Table were evil? Imagine Camelot as the seat of darkness and the knights the dangerous gang that raids out from it. You’ll have to defeat them and the other monsters of the realm. By making Arthur the villain, there’s an opportunity to make something new and unexpected out of this world. If you’re looking for an original take on a classic tale, this might speak to you.

Saphyx Spectacular Spell Compendiums for 5e – Make100 from Awfully Queer Heroes
  • END DATE: Thu, February 9 2023 12:02 PM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebooks
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £19 for the digital versions of both books
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Part of Kickstarter’s Make 100 initiative, this campaign offers two spellbooks. One has Cantrips as well as 1st and 2nd level spells from 5e, the other provides 3rd, 4th, and 5th level spells. At 100 spells per book, these are original spells to add to your character’s options. If they reach their stretch goal, they’ll add a mini-book with the remaining levels of spells. Check out the campaign page for a sample of the book.

Yoon-Suin: The Purple Land, 2nd Edition from Noisms Games
  • END DATE: Fri, February 10 2023 12:06 PM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £30 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? The first edition of Yoon-Suin: The Purple Land dropped in 2014. Nine years later, it’s time to revise this project, refresh the options and art, and get it back on gaming tables. This toolkit is a random setting generator advertising a fantasy world of opium, luxury, and cruelty. With the second edition, you’ll get the original text plus new material like monsters, appendices, tables, and fully mapped adventures. If you’re looking a different way to create a fantasy setting, this may appeal to you.

Dungeoncaster, Story-Driven Fantasy TTRPG Ruleset from Gallant Knight Games
  • END DATE: Sat, February 11 2023 6:51 PM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): Caster System (Highcaster Roleplaying Game)
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $25 for the PDF and POD versions of the book plus the digital version of the SRD
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Filling a need in the current climate of RPGs, Dungeoncaster advertises itself as an open source ruleset. This setting-agnostic fantasy rulebook gives you the tools to address combat, magic, and travel, you’ll just need to add the setting. Coming in at 120 pages, this game has heritages and paths like any OSR or Pathfinder (elves, clerics, and rogues, etc.). If you’re interested in a new fantasy ruleset that mimics D&D including the dice, this might be worth checking out.

Savage Shapeshifters: Quick-adventures for D&D 5e - $1 from Luna Publishing
  • END DATE: Sun, February 12 2023 11:55 PM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $5 for the PDF of both books
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? $1 gets you five lycanthrope based adventures for 5e. $5 gets you those plus an additional book that gives you 5e options such as a new species, Garou, new subclasses, spells, and more. These adventures offer straight were-creature hunts and moral choices as you decide if packs should be hunted or not. If were-creatures and 5e are your thing, this project may speak to you.

Forty Fiends - A Mork Borg Compatible Bestiary from Crow Heart Roleplay Resources
  • END DATE: Tue, February 14 2023 5:00 PM EST.
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £20 + £6 S/H in the US for the PDF and print version of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Need 40 creatures for your MÖRK BORG adventures? This campaign offers an RPG zine with monsters and random charts, all fitting for the MÖRK BORG universe. It’s a pretty straight forward project, you get a collection of adversaries in one book.

Level Up: A5E Gate Pass Gazette Annual 2022 from EN Publishing
  • END DATE: Thu, February 9 2023 10:52 AM EST.
  • SYSTEM(S): Level Up! Advanced Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £40 + £5 S/H in the United States for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • DISCLAIMER: EN World is a subsidiary of EN Publishing
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? I talked about this in last week’s column, but I want to shine another spotlight on EN Publishing’s (EN World’s parent company) latest Kickstarter. This book pulls together 220 pages of archetypes, the Artificer subclass, backgrounds, feats, monsters, and spells from 2022’s Gate Pass Gazette. If A5E interests you, this is worth checking out.

Dolmenwood Continuing As Planned

As the Dolmenwood setting books consist almost entirely of original material (i.e. not material derived from Open Game Content), Dolmenwood is unaffected by the pending OGL changes. We'll make an announcement once we have a concrete date for the Kickstarter.

Yoon Suin isn’t an original system. It’s mostly system neutral, but has some stats for Labyrinth Lord (OSR)
As per the author:

It is almost system-agnostic. There are stats, based on BECMI D&D, but they are sparse, and everything is easily reskinned - people often tell me they have played Yoon-Suin campaigns in all manner of different systems.

I've ran Yoon Suin in 5e and in Troika! - in fact, for Troika! only 2/36 classes wouldn't work, so very little conversion is needed... I suspect the GLOG would work great too.

I'm very excited for this one!
