RPG Crowdfunding News – Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 2, Mercenaries Spies & Private Eyes, Gods, and Enli

In this article, I cover RPG Kickstarters ending between March 22nd and 28th including projects from Flying Buffalo and Steve Jackson Games along with translations of games from France, some enlightenment punk from England, and 15 zines. This is not an exhaustive list as there are at least 5 more RPG Kickstarters beyond these, and that’s just for this timeframe. As it has been since the start of February, it’s a spoil of RPG riches on Kickstarter.

Mercenaries Spies & Private Eyes RPG by Michael Stackpole (Flying Buffalo)

  • END DATE: Tue, March 26 2019 3:46 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Mercenaries, Spies, and Private Eyes (MSPE)
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $18 with US shipping included for the PDF and print of Mercenaries Spies & Private Eyes RPG
“A New Edition of the rulebook for Mercenaries, Spies, and Private Eyes (MSPE) a modern roleplaying game by Michael Stackpole. Mercenaries, Spies & Private Eyes RPG was first published in 1983 by Flying Buffalo Inc. MSPE (as it came to be known) allowed players to run rpg adventures from the 1800's all the way to the modern era, ranging from Victorian steampunk, and crime noir, to super spy thrilllers in the cold war. Michael Stackpole wrote the MSPE role playing game, using the Tunnels & Trolls framework as a jumping off point. In 1986, Flying Buffalo took a hit from an unrelated disaster, and sold the rights for MSPE to Sleuth Publications. They came out with an edition that had a black & white cover, and they left out a few things that Buffalo had included, and inserted a few new things that weren't in the Buffalo edition. The last existing copies of the Sleuth edition have sold out, so now Flying Buffalo is printing a third (Combined Edition of MSPE) which includes all the material that was in both editions! The Combined Edition: What's in it? The new edition will contain all the original text and art from the Flying Buffalo and Sleuth editions. From the Buffalo edition, we will use the amazing painted cover and will include the “Tunnels & Thompsons” section (which was not in the Sleuth edition) along with some missing art. We have also made various corrections to the rules text that have been found by players and fans over the years. The Sleuth edition had several extra sections at the end of the rules that are not in the Buffalo edition. These include optional rules on aging; 13 fully described statted Non-Player characters (including Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty - illustrated by Liz Danforth) and a special folding version of the MSPE Character Sheet. All of these will be added to the Combined Edition. PLUS New material: On top of that, we are also going to add some new information on using MSPE in sci-fi environments and info on stopping distances for vehicles. All newly illustrated by Steve Crompton. We just might also add a few other rule enhancements based on the response to this Kickstarter. We will be including all of this in the Combined Edition - (Along with, possibly, a few other surprises!) The rules will be printed as a trade paperback 8 x 11, (or as a hardback) and for a little extra you can even get your copy of the rules signed by Michael Stackpole.”

GODS - The dark fantasy RPG by Arkhane Asylum Publishing (through Modiphius Entertainment)

  • END DATE: Thu, March 28 2019 10:59 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original RPG system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: €100 plus S&H for PDF and print versions of the core rulebook, gamemaster book, and gamemaster screen plus digital stretch goals
“A new epic and grim fantasy tabletop roleplaying game. GODS is a dark fantasy tabletop roleplaying game created by Bastien Lecouffe Deharme and Julien Blondel. GODS is a love song to the legendary writers and artists who defined the genre, such as Robert E. Howard, Karl E. Wagner, Michael Moorcock, Glen Cook or Frank Frazetta. The game invites the players to play heroes seeking high adventure in the Wildlands, a brutal land abandoned and forgotten by the gods. From one-shots adventures to massive campaigns, GODS will offer a variety of game modes and provide a modern and adult gaming experience, supported by a d10 system that favors gameplay, narrative and fun without leaving simulation and realism aside. The rules of GODS are based on the TOTEM SYSTEM and use 10-sided dice to manage gaming phases. Combat, magic, negotiation, enchantment of objects or simple travels and adventures: all technical aspects use the same mechanics. Characters are defined by Traits associated to a number of dice. When a character performs an action, the player simply rolls a number of dice equal to the score of the Trait used, generally a number between 1D and 3D. Whenever a character undertakes an action where the outcome is uncertain, the player rolls a number of 10-sided dice equal to the score of the Trait at hand and compares the result of each die to a Difficulty ranging from 1 to 10. The more results that are equal to or higher than the Difficulty, the more successful the character is. The Core rulebook (est. to be around 460 pages) and the Gamemaster book (est. to be around 180 pages) will be printed in US Letter format, on a high-quality paper in full color, with a hardcover and printed end sheets. Each book will have a black ribbon and head and tail bands. The Gamemaster screen will have three panels printed in landscape format on a heavy board, and will have a glossy varnish on the outside, and a matt varnish on the inside to prevent light reflection.”

Leviathan Rising: An enlightenment-punk roleplaying game by Hand Over Fist Games

  • END DATE: Thu, March 28 2019 6:30 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Fate
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £25 + £10 US shipping for PDF and print copies of the game plus digital stretch goals
“A tabletop RPG of 17th-century rebels fighting for fraternity, equality and liberty. Leviathan Rising is a high action table top role-playing game about 17th century rebels fighting for equality, fraternity and liberty against a sinister cabal of nobles. Characters in Leviathan Rising are chosen by the Rebellion to represent them and spearhead the fight for freedom. They can expect to move across Europe, fighting corrupt nobles, defending the innocent, freeing the enslaved and wrongfully imprisoned, opposing tyranny and stirring the hearts of the people towards liberty. Opposing the heroes are the Peerage, A secret society of corrupt nobles who have found the power of ritual magic and now use it to more fully oppress and subjugate their people. The Peerage has the eventual goal of elevating one of its number to the very heavens as a dark new god. The world of Leviathan Rising is similar to mid-17th century Europe. This is a game of alternate history, and almost any detail that you think would be interesting from history can be moved across. This is a time of great unrest in Europe, which can be used profitably in your games. Leviathan Rising is an enlightenmentpunk game. The characters are outcast heroes who are fighting against a corrupt establishment. The game is suspicious of the powerful and actively contemptuous of the idea of nobility. Instead the heroes are those who society has failed and rejected who have decided to fight to save the common man. The Rebellion is fighting for the ideals of the enlightenment, which they define as a rejection of noble rule, a belief in fundamental human rights and striving towards equality for all people.”

The Citadel at Norðvorn
Return to Norðlond with this detailed Norse-flavored setting for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG.

END DATE: Sun, March 24 2019
SYSTEM(S): Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game, Powered by GURPS
PROJECT TYPE: Setting/Sourcebook
MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $35 plus S&H for PDF and print versions of The Citadel at Norðvorn

View attachment 105426

The Citadel at Norðvorn is a setting for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG. It consists of three major settlements, many small villages, at least one ruin, and two primary sources of conflict: The Hunted Lands to the northwest of The Palisade, and the Endalaus Forest, to the north and east of Audreyn's Wall.

Return to Norðlond, a Viking-flavored world with its own history, culture, and expectations. Visit as an outsider, or fresh from a victory rediscovering the Hall of Judgment.

It is intended for starting Dungeon Fantasy RPG characters of 250 points. They will be major players, and the fulcrum around which the future of Norðlond turns. While it is set in the same world as Hall of Judgment, it is not sequel. It is a setting, filled with adventuring possibilities, and easily tuned up or down in power level as the GM desired to suit any fantasy campaign!

There's more support out there for the excellent Dungeon Fantasy RPG, and it's on Kickstarter now. Between Citadel and Hall of Judgment, you have weeks of play, ready to go.
