RPG Crowdfunding News – Return to Dark Tower, Endless Realms, Incredible Items, and more

This week, I’m looking at RPG crowdfunding projects that end between June 20 and 30. This sampling gives us board games brought to RPGs, other projects converted to 5e, a pair of gangster projects, and more. As always, this is a taste of what is out there, and I encourage you to explore all of the gaming options crowdfunding right now.

Return to Dark Tower Fantasy Roleplaying Game from 9th Level Games
  • END DATE: Thu, June 30 2022 4:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Powered by Polymorph
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $125 + S/H for the PDF, Roll20, and hardcover versions of the book, the GM screen, and the Player Tower accessory (dice tower, cards, tokens, and sheets)
  • ADDITIONAL REPORTING: Return to Dark Tower RPG: An Interview with Chris O'Neill
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Coming from the 1980s to your roleplaying group, 9th Level Games licensed Restoration Games’ Return to Dark Tower to create an old school RPG with a modern system. Using the award-winning Polymorph engine as seen in MAZES (IGDN BEST RULES 2020 and nominated for ENnie - BEST RULES), you’ll play as a hero and a companion, fighting against a new evil that has risen in the Dark Tower. You must save the land before the power of the Tower overruns everything. Across five or six sessions (in game, the campaign covers a year), you’ll raise the forces necessary to defeat this evil. The Polymorph system is clever and does what’s advertised, it’s old school, but built with new mechanics. If you’re looking for a simple, solid option to bring a beloved board game to tabletop, the campaign page includes a sneak peak of the system and options.

Endless Realms: Creature Compendium 5E from Lunar Games
  • END DATE: Tue, June 28 2022 11:00 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: CA$33 for the PDF and POD versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This book brings Endless Realms monsters to 5e. 240 creatures and subtypes, each paired with a full-color illustration to cement the threat to your player’s characters. Since these are taken from the Endless Realms RPG, they’re born of unique concepts such as creatures of solid light, dragons whose personality and beings are as transient as the wind, infiltrators, and more. These creatures will break up the sameness of endless combat with goblins and kobolds. If your table needs a unique set of monsters for your 5e game, check out the campaign page.

The Atlas of the Latter Earth from Sine Nomine Publishing
  • END DATE: Thu, June 30 2022 11:30 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Worlds Without Number
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $60 and free S/H in the US for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Expanding Worlds Without Number, this tome details Latter Earth, its deadly days as humans rose even as their many great rulers fell. Thirty eight nations interlock the land, their borders and countryside festooned with monsters, many of which are detailed here. This 200-page atlas explores the land, gifting new classes and new origin Foci (ancestries) for the game. With options for low- and no-magic campaigns, this book gives details to the setting and rule options representing adventures without number
Incredible Items from Alan Tucker
  • END DATE: Thu, June 30 2022 10:26 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $15 for the PDF and POD versions of the book
  • TRY BEFORE YOU BUY: Incredible Items FREE Sampler
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? If you need over 150 5e magic items, over 100 of which are illustrated, this book is likely to speak to you. This tome works better than some as Alan Tucker gave the artists the opportunity to do all of the designs. Only after they saw the images did the writers develop each item’s powers, all based on the images. That collaboration offers original unexpected concepts. If you need beautiful, artisanal magic items, this campaign is worth a review. In addition, the page has a link to test out their magic wares before you throw your money at them.

Gangs of Titan City: Grimdark Urban Roleplaying from SoulMuppet Publishing

  • SYSTEM(S): Powered by the Apocalypse
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £40 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? You play as thugs looking to rise to the top of the underworld in this grimdark future RPG. Inspired by Peaky Blinders, Scarface, Judge Dredd & 2000AD, Altered Carbon, Blade Runner, Mad Max, and Blades in the Dark, the game features a simple 2d6 system similar to Powered by the Apocalypse built for stories about gangsters making big moves, always looking for that last score. This 270-page book comes from the creators of Best Left Buried. If you want to commit crimes to see if it does pay, this game may speak to you.

Shakedown City from Pizza Games

  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rule zine
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: €15 for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • NOTE: If you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber, shipping is free.
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Lets look at another crime RPG. In a single session, you’ll create a shady city full of criminals in a tale of gang wars that culminate in the crowning of a new prince of the underworld. In the style of The Quiet Year, this GM-less project uses a normal deck of cards as you draw and collaborate on a setting and tale of concrete and blood.

Reign of Discordia 2nd Edition from Darrin Drader Designs
  • END DATE: Thu, June 30 2022 12:29 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition and White Star
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $45 for the PDF and POD versions of both systems for the book as well an electronic copy of the tie-in fiction
  • NOTE: Due to illness, the original version of this campaign was canceled, but has been relaunched here.
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? The new edition of Reign of Discordia is back, brought to you by the original author. After relaunching, the updated edition of this game (originally for True20), gives you 5e and White Star rulesets. As I shared last time, this game takes inspiration from the biggest sci-fi franchises of the 1970s to tell the story of a fallen empire and your character’s chance to get ahead amid the chaos. If you want to play in a 5e or OSR sci-fi RPG, one with a pedigree, this campaign is worth checking out.

CY_Borg: Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die from Astrolich

  • SYSTEM(S): CY_Borg and MÖRK BORG
  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG zine
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $15 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Do you need light weight chase rules and vehicle combat options for CY_Borg, and, by extension, MÖRK BORG? This 24-page zine offers fuel injected mayhem including high speed combat rules, tables of hazards, lists of vehicles, how to incorporate the city, and so much more. If you’re a fan of characters living fast and doom RPGs, these combat options may speak to you.
