A Town Called Malice - A Nordic Horror Story Game by Monkeyfun Studios, LLC

  • SYSTEM(S): “Story Pillar System, created by Protagonist Industries in their work, Home by Dark, by Jason Olsan”
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $20 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the game plus all unlocked stretch goals
Monkeyfun Studios delivers another exciting game experience, based on complex relationships, horror and isolation. A Town Called Malice is the new story game by Monkeyfun Studios, created by David Kizzia. It’s a combination of thematic Nordic Noir such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Broadchurch and The Killing, with isolated small-town horror similar to Thirty Days of Night, The Thing and Fortitude. Twin Peaks by David Lynch is a heavy influence, in its portrayal of small town secrets and underlying darkness that pervades every step the characters take. A Town Called Malice is based on the Story Pillar System, created by Protagonist Industriesin their work, Home by Dark by Jason Olsan. This system utilizes story game elements popularized in games such as Fiasco, where players develop the narrative and create complex character relationships as they struggle to keep the town together. A Town Called Malice involves the isolation of small towns tucked away from busy highways and large cities. Although the default setting envisions an isolated snowbound Nordic island or outpost near the Arctic Circle, a game of Malice can be set in other locations such as the rainy Pacific Northwest, a sun-drenched tourist stop that vacates when summer ends or even a cold, distant way-station in outer space. Malice is truly everywhere.”

“A table top story game about the heroic women of the SOE in occupied France for 2-5 players. It is time for women to come to the forefront of history — a place where they have always been, though they are often overlooked. Bravery was on every front of World War 2. But how much courage does it take to do your job when surrounded not by friends but by enemies? When your first mistake might be your last, and hundreds of people in the war effort are relying upon you? It is the Second World War. France has fallen to the Nazis and Churchill decides to disrupt Hitler's war machine in the occupied countries. He forms a volunteer group with one mission: to set Europe ablaze. Sometimes known as “Churchill’s Secret Army”, the Special Operations Executive (SOE) recruits agents from all walks of life. Unusually, they recruit women as well as men. It is the only place on the western front where women train for combat operations just like the men. A game session can take from 2-4 hours to play. All you need is a pack of playing cards, some paper and pens, and this short 6" x 9" format rulebook. You don’t need any historical knowledge to play — I have filled the rulebook with real-life examples that will help steer you towards the kind of situations and dilemmas which were faced by women working in the SOE.”

Far Away Land Old School Role-Playing Game by Simian Circle Games

  • END DATE: Wed, May 29 2019 11:45 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): OSR
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $22 for the PDF and POD of the game
“OSR version of the Far Away Land RPG compatible with older versions of the world's most famous game and its clones.
The Far Away Land (FAL) OSR is a re-imagining of the Far Away Land RPG – through the lens of OSR-style games and mechanics. This project was inspired by Swords and Wizardry Light, a stripped-down, rules-lite version of Swords and Wizardry that uses only d20s and d6s. FAL was originally inspired by simple, old school gaming mechanics that place emphasis on characters, story, and adventures rather than heavy rules. This version of FAL uses familiar mechanics (6 stats, HP, AC, etc.) mashed into the Far Away Land setting. It maintains the tradition of a rules-lite game while using a more well-known system that is compatible with the world’s most famous rpg and many of its clones. Essentially, FAL OSR is a complete circle, back to what initially inspired the original game, set in the gonzo world of Far Away Land. The physical book is 130 pages, 8.5 x 11, full color. It features rules for character creation, new classes, new playable races, 100 monsters, new spells, tons of rules for various mini games and lots more (detailed chapter by chapter below). The book is written, tested, and finished. It has a ton of artwork in the style of Far Away Land and maintains the quirky nature of that setting while giving players familiar (although modified rules).”

Trilemma Adventures Compendium by Michael Prescott

  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure module
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: CA$66 + CA$7 US shipping for the PDF and the compilation hardcover edition
“A compendium of 48 adventure locations, settlements, and regions for fantasy role-playing games. Each adventure is lovingly illustrated, and fits on a single page or spread, making it easy use as a one-shot, a drop-in location in your home-grown campaign setting, or a source of ideas for your own creations. The adventures in the book are dungeons, ruined towers, underworld mega-caverns, creepy cult hideouts, treacherous cities, and deadly wilderness regions, all in the same easy-to-reference format. My adventures are inspired by the weather-stained heroism of Middle-earth, the grounded, emotional honesty of Earthsea, and the fantastic whimsey of stories like Rupert Bear. There are classic underground loot grabs, encounters wondrous and weird, terrors from ages past, and apocalyptic showdowns—48 complete scenarios in all. I don't put in stats, so they're best for games where you can stat on the fly: early editions of D&D, Dungeon World, Torchbearer, Into the Odd, Maze Rats, or World of Dungeons (to name but a few). They also work fine in 5e by using similar creatures. The book is 112 pages, without stretch goals, and up to 160 pages.

Oh, and it’s The Mother of All Marketplaces, with more than 60 vendors showcasing a wide variety of jazz, snazz, and zazz, boosting the geekonomy like old school Robin Hoods but without the stealing and the archery (ok, not like Robin Hoods. I failed analogy class in Kindergarten). Don’t forget the parties…Did I mention the parties? There are parties. A LOT of them. Also there are other things, like amazing special Guests, the Children of the Cob, the Comedy Music Extravagasm!, a Drag Show, a Burlesque Show, Karaoke, a super sweet Auction, Food Trucks, a Games Library, free snacks in the Con Suite, Panels, Workshops, and Demos, a whole track of Cosplay and Fandom related activities, and a massive horde of potential friends and peeps who dig the same things you dig! Is there a Tunnels & Trolls revival going on that I may be missing? Seems like I have seen a bunch of T&T stuff lately.

A good deal of interesting projects in this one. A Town Called Malice and Genefunk look really cool.

SMHWorlds,

I've noticed a lot of T&T attention as well but I don't think there's any specific revival. But, it is a good thing. :)

I really like the idea of the Kingmaker campaign revisions but pre-paying for an rpg book that won’t come out for about a year and a half is madness.

Thanks for bringing Facing the Titan here!

A Town called Malice seems very good from here, will back for sure. As well as Trilemma Adventures. I've already used so much of these adventures.
