RPG Evolution: Medieval Dragon Mug

I got this mug as a gift and was impressed by the detail.

The Good

This mug is about four and a half inches high and four inches in diameter, with the handle adding an additional inch or so.

The detail on this mug is striking. It's meant to be used as a drinking stein, as there's a stainless steel interior. There's two dragons repeating on each side, plus a wyvern for a handle. There is detailed knotwork along the bottom and a repeating antler design along the top. The mug is referenced online as being a Game of Thrones-themed mug but there doesn't seem to be much tie in, other than perhaps the antlers.

The Bad

Due to the handle, this mug is virtually impossible to fit your full hand in it, making it unsuitable for drinking. The picture that's on the site even makes this clear -- three fingers at most!

You can't run it through a dishwasher either or use it in the microwave. And the detail, while striking, is completely muddled by the generic metallic design.

Should You Buy It?

So of course I painted it. There's a lot of great sculpted detail that really pops once it's given a wash and a dry brush. I'm quite happy with how it turned out, and it's now a worthy addition to my desk decor. If you're looking for a mug to hold dice or pencils, for twenty bucks this is a great investment. Just don't expect to drink out of it. You can purchase this product at Amazon for $20.

I'm not a fan of the various resin-cast fantasy mugs or steins that are out there, like this one. They look cool from a distance, but up close are obviously not made of what they (usually) mimic, metal and wood. And they don't "feel" right in my hands.

I do have a resin skull mug on my teacher desk at work holding pencils . . . it does add a bit of character to my desk!

I haven't picked one up yet, but what I really want is a nice, sizeable mug or stein made of actual, real wood . . . something sturdy I can take to the game at the store or a friend's house . . . there's a lot of cool offerings on Etsy, but it's all a bit pricey, if understandably so.

For a mug that is all of functional, heavy, can be used as a weapon and rather pricey: https://www.kickstarter.com/project...very&term=Brass&total_hits=726&category_id=28

The Amazon mug above is good for a decorative piece. Gaming room decor is sometimes hard to find.

It's amazing to me how many of the fantasy mugs actually don't function as mugs. You can't wash them in a dishwasher, but I'm willing to forgive that if they're really detailed -- but the fact the handle isn't large enough for an adult to actually hold it? At that point it's just a pen holder anyway (which is what mine ended up being).
