RPG Freebies, Bundles, and Sales News (May 22, 2022)

Welcome to the Bundles, Freebies, and Sales News, the weekly column at EN World that helps make sure you don’t miss out on big tabletop RPG bundles, charity fundraisers, and sales from around the internet.

Freebies and Pay What You Want

Well it would be odd if I started off my EN World column on RPG freebies and didn’t mention the free roleplaying game from EN Publishing. Morrus created an entirely free game Lifepath that, as the title suggests, uses a lifepath character creation system to quickly make characters with a full character builder for both fantasy and science fiction.

The purchase of D&D Beyond by Wizards of the Coast brings us two free books. First, the sourcebook Acquisitions Incorporated based on the live events and streams of the creators of Penny Arcade among others will be available free for a limited time. Also, the original starter set adventure for 5e, The Lost Mines of Phandelver, will now be free from now on and, if you have a D&D Beyond account, should be available to you now under the Sources menu.

If you’ve heard about the big Kickstarter for Everyday Heroes, the 5e reboot inspired by the old D20 Modern system, you’ll be glad to know that the Quickstart is already available on DriveThruRPG. The 96-page book features the streamlined rules to jump in immediately to get ahead of the official release, which will include licensed settings for franchises including The Crow, Highlander, King Kong, Pacific Rim, Escape from New York, Rambo, Total Recall, and Universal Soldier.

The playtest rules for Cowboy Bebop Roleplaying Game is also available for free, based on the 1998 anime series of the same name. These are not the final rules for the game but a preliminary version of the rules meant for testing. The full game will be available on Kickstarter later this year.

Over on Storyteller’s Vault, Ismael Alves posted the alpha version of Sao Paulo by Night for Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition. This setting book provides information about the Brazilian city and its 400 year history including a brutal war between the Sabbat and the Camarilla in the 1990s for control.

On DM’s Guild, for those who thought that Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos needed a bit more emphasis on the “chaos”, BonusActionRainbow gives us an updated Wild Magic Surge table specifically tailored for the campaign setting including a rollable table meant for the Foundry VTT plus guides for both players and DMs for using the supplement.
  • Price: Pay What You Want (Suggested: $0.95)

I’m just going to copy the description for the iJug supplement on DM’s Guild from Steph Bowen: “Legend says a mage once had a brilliant idea of squeezing a Beholder into an Alchemy Jug! This item, and the subsequent smear on the wall, is the result.”

I like the Lifepath thing. There are a lot of attempts to make 'standard fantasy game but with fewer rules so I can do storytelling instead of number crunching', and this one allows for a variety of characters and is broad enough you could use it for stories as well as games. Well done!

It looks like the D&D sale is "up to 40% off" what is available for more of a discount than that?
Several of the third-party OGL products were discounted from over $1.00 to just a few cents. You'd have to dig to find them because there's no "sort by discount" option if you're just looking for the highest discounts.
