RPG Kickstarter Zine Quest News – The Initial Seven Zines

Kickstarter’s February initiative is called, Zine Quest, and it features RPG zines. Built on a nostalgia for the early days of tabletop when zines – single color, hand-folded mini-magazines – were an integral part of the scene, this initiative appears to be reigniting that interest. Over 20 zines have dropped since February 1st and more are lined up. In this article, I look at Zine Quest Kickstarters ending between February 10th and the 21st.

I'm going to check these out so it is not a big deal, but it might be helpful to see the funding goal in these write-ups.

dave2008,

This isn't quite what you're asking, but, of the 35 Zine Quests I'm watching right now, here are some goal numbers:

  • Goal of less than $500 - 10 Kickstarters (all currently over their goal)
  • Goal of $500 - 7 Kickstarters (4 currently over their goal)
  • Goal of $501 to $999 - 3 Kickstarters (2 currently over their goal)
  • Goal of $1,000 - 10 Kickstarters (7 currently over their goal)
  • Goal over $1,000 - 5 Kickstarters (2 currently over their goal)

25 of 35 are over their goals already.

Thank you,

Egg Embry

Yikes! I don't know how to contact Jeremy Hart Illos (Creature Feature Quarterly); but I fear his kickstarter is in violation of the DMsGuild guidelines as I believe he has already sold his work on the that site.

That's great - thank you for sharing. I remember in one of our earlier post on Zine Quest that Kickstarter was hoping for low funding goals $1000-$2000 and it looks like the campaign is delivering! Keep up the good work!

I can't 100% verify this but my understanding based on a few posts and conversations I've had in comments sections is he contacted Wizards and made a deal with them to move his stuff around (possibly ending future sales on DMsGuild after a certain time period, but I don't know that for sure). He's very active on Facebook and Instagram if you want to contact him directly. He's been very forthcoming about the situation, I just don't recall all the details.

Good to know! I have some of his stuff on my Dms Guild "wishlist" so I was worried they might shut down his kickstarter, which would be unfortunate.

I have launched a new rpg supplement project as part of Kickstarter's Zine Quest campaign.

"Other Magic" takes the spells, rituals, and practices of real world traditional magic system and translates them into rpg-compatible formats. The first issue includes information on American hoodoo, Pennsylvania Dutch braucheri/powowwing, and more.

If you have an interest in bringing real world practices into your game or in taking a more subtle approach to magic in rpgs, please check it out!
