RPG music

I have a lot of music. I am looking for a sort of ambient generic type of medieval music. Nothing with words or anything. Im NOT looking for any sort of iconic video game music (final fantasy zelda etc). I dont want any sort of metal or anything, I probably have all that stuff anyway. Any suggestions?

Sonic Legends is worth checking out. I don't use music much in my games, but when I did want some I used theirs.

If you can find it, the soundtrack that came with the 3rd edition Sharn: City of Towers book has some really good instrumental music.

Also, Midnight Syndicate's Dungeons & Dragons soundtrack is really solid.

Firefly Soundtrack has some that work very well.

The God of War soundtracks are good (not very iconic, but good instrumentals for action sequences)

BBC's Merlin series has some soundtrack CDs. Found them at Amazon for the kid - who demands all things Merlin-y.

Is any video game music ok as long as it's not "iconic" (which I assume means widely known), or none at all?

This. It is some really good background music for D&D.

A lot of Howard Shore's soundtrack music for the Lord of the Rings movies isn't that iconic and recognizable (aside from a few parts), since it was more background music.

It's kinda iconic in its own way, but Anvil of Crom from the original version of Conan the Barbarian is a soundtrack favorite of mine.

The best I ever found was Battlestar Galactica. It is a great mix of different types of music that, somehow, always hits an uptempo combat song when combat gets exciting. There is also like 20+ hours of music, which means it never gets too familiar and you can just loop it for an entire campaign.

As an aside--there is one track called Battlestar Muzactica that just does not fit at all (think space polka) and is all of a minute long. Evidently it played in the background of some bar scene that I never noticed. At any rate, we had a rule that if Battlestar Muzactica came on and you stood up and danced for a full 360, all of your fate points (action point alternative) returned. One fateful session the BBEG of the campaign arc got a bit too lucky and was about to TPK the party. On comes Muzactica, they all jump up, dance like idiots, rally back, and pull out a win. It was epic and I was relieved because I was pretty darn invested in the camp by this point.

I'll always respect Battlestar Muzactica for that.
