RPG Now and Drive Through RPG merge

This is truly a sad day. I really liked RPGNow. All I can say is that I hope the new site will be built along their lines rather than Drive Through's. With RPG Now I had fast, easy access, good web design, and actually got the products I wanted within minutes. I'll just say this now and for the record: if the new site uses either DRM or watermarking, I'm not buying a thing from it. And that's sad, because I love PDFs and I love supporting the little guys who make them.

A bad day for our hobby...

DTRPG 100% never had my DL ready within 24 hours after I DL'ed it, and generally I had to email and pester them to get their shi..."act" together.
Really? Whenever I've used DTRPG, the download has been ready almost before I finished clicking on the necessary links.

Quoted for truth.

I certainly hope they keep both sites up for a while. During the past couple of months you could almost count on one of the sites being down.

One of the few reasons I ever purchased from DTRPG was because the RPGNow.com site was down for a while and acting flakey.

As for needing both company's personnel, companies typically merge to streamline processes and eliminate redundancies (i.e. jobs). I'd suspect after an initial shakedown period to make sure everything is working with the new company that the axe will be falling in some departments. :(

I look forward to success for the new company as their success reflects on the health of the overall RPG industry to put out new product.

As I understand it, use of DRM and watermarks at DTRPG has been voluntary on the part of the publisher since shortly after DTRPG opened. Nobody's given any argument or evidence that this will change.

How many people work at these places? I always figured a low head count was one of the good things for companies like this?

Do they even have departments?

I'm another consumer who will be trumpeting the fact that this is indeed a sad day for our hobby.

Hopefully some day someone will realize that corporate mergers don't do anyone any favors except the executives who survive the merger and the major shareholders. In this case publishers, consumers and employees lose.

I've been involved on the inside of mergers and at no time does the resulting corporate entity decide to share the pie with consumers. They consider consumers to be the pie. A pie to be gorged upon by the fat kid at a pie-eating contest.

The merging businesses usually make a "good for everyone especially the consumers" speech. They may even start off with some special deals or at worst no changes. But as time goes on the lack of competition shows.

In my industry we buy out our competition and then set prices accordingly. Its sad but true. Consumers are hurt and so are employees of the merging companies. The pattern is always the same - put out a speech, make no immediate price changes - then gradually adjust according to decreased market competition (which doesn't exist in this case).

Grrrr. This may cause me to change my sig.

We fully intend on supporting the new store, and will continue to support the Enworld gaming community. So expect to see more give-aways, press releases, and other supporting services from us right here on these forums.

Enworld will always be a place for the gaming community, and I am certain that it will only get better!

That's certainly true now, but it wasn't the case at site launch, and the option just wasn't available on Rpgnow, which made them a much better alternative. If I'm a publisher and I now have a new option available to me for "security" then I'm going to consider taking it.

My point is that this should not be the default method for delivering a PDF, and also if it's just an option and a publisher takes that option, they're not getting me to purchase anything from 'em. And I actually do buy PDFs, and encourage others to do so as well!

I also found DTRPG to be slow, even on free downloads like the Player's Guide to Ptolus. Never once had any problem with RPGNow.
