RPG purchases you use(ed) regularly

Call of Cthulhu - loved this game. Like the d20 version, but not as much.

Rifts - played this quite a bit in HS, it's supplied some fondly remembered stories of Sss'haa (remember flipping out every time the GM mispronounced that!), my PC of a Predator-like alien race who just wouldn't die, even after losing both hands, the right arm, and half a leg.

Shadowrun - played this quite a bit in HS, too. We even programmed our TI-81's (calculators) to serve as dice rollers...

DnD too, but that hardly counts, now does it? I've only played 2e, 3e, and Basic (wanting to give 1e a spin). Of my vast number of books I own, really only the PHB, DMG, MM, ELH, OA, Wheel of Time (for the Reputation rules), and the Living Greyhawk book see steady use. MOTP sees some use (will see more soon), and Nyambe will see use eventually, as will Legions of Hell and Armies of the Abyss (most likely, the latter will see more).

I haven't played anything besides D&D :(

I feel pathetic.

YOU ARE. GET OFF THESE BOARDS, YOU AMATEUR!!

;)

Seriously, though...

I have regularly played:

  • D&D in all its permutations
  • Vampire: The Masquerade (both tabletop and LARPing (where somehow I made it to Prince))
  • 7th Sea
  • Villains & Vigilantes (boy, I miss that game)
  • Cyberpunk 2020
  • Twilight 2000
  • Paranoia
  • Deadlands
  • In Nomine (phenomenal game....everyone should play this games at least once)
  • Champions
  • Brave New World
  • Star Wars d20
  • Hong Kong Action Theater
  • RIFTS (awesome setting....not too crazy about the game mechanics)
  • Gamma World
  • Boot Hill
  • Top Secret

I'm sure there are a few more which escape my drug-addled memory....

In the past:

D&D, AD&D
Star Frontiers
Gamma World
Top Secret
Twilight 2000

Currently:
Rolemaster
HarnMaster
Warhammer FRPG
All Flesh Must Be Eaten
Call of Cthulu
my own system

CyberPunk 2020
- Nine solid years, I played this. I own a nearly perfect collection of CyberPunk books, including just about every other cyberpunk-styled RPG (including all three editions of Shadowrun, Cyberspace, Underground...), just for use as sourcebooks. Cyberpunk was my BIG deal gaming effort before d20. I still host one of the biggest cyberpunk 2020 RPG websites on the net. http://www.ambient.ca/cpunk

I can almost copy this block completely, the only difference is I didn't host the blackhammerproject, I ripped the blackhammer project for ideas! For some reason Parent always writes stuff I end up using in my campaigns:D

D&D of couse, since I was a 7 or 8 year old watching my brother's group.

But I can't believe GURPS hasn't been mentioned. We tried this several times for a more gritty fantasy game, and I still like it. Now with d20's tighness, though, we haven't gone back to it.

Played Shadowrun for a year in the mid 90's but thought the system was rather flawed.

Some people here have an amazingly broad range of experience in role playing games. For most of you have had experience in a wide range of games, were they generall played with the same group of people? Or did each game (or genre of game) have their own gaming group?

The people I have played with over the years were all basically D&D and Battletech people.

The big games in my life:

Original Dungeons & Dragons

Gamma World

Star Frontiers

Top Secret

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness

Traveller
(particularly MegaTraveller).

Villains & Vigilantes

Call of Cthulhu

Pretty close to my list. I would have to add:

Pendragon
Car Wars
and these Days D&D3e

hmm I am sure there are others.. but those were the "core" of my time in previous years. Most of those were played during the 5 years I was growing up in Saudi Arabia so were with the same group of people. Playing Top Secret during the height of the Cold War while looking out over a desert at missile and radar installations added a certain "edge". The Ace of Clubs will live forever in my mind!

Hmmm...

DnD in all its forms : Uh... yeah

Rifts : Really, with a good DM, Rifts can be a lot of fun. It will never be BALANCED, but again, with a good DM, that isn't important... even the mightiest characters (Cosmoknights, Nuroni 'borgs, etc) can be taken down. And it's a lot of fun to roleplay in the Rifts world. System sucks, however.

Vampire : Sure, it's a bit angsty, like so many WW games, but I enjoy it.

Mage : It's not Ars Magica, but Mage is fun in it's own way.

Mage: Sorcerer (Not Sorcerer's Crusade, just Sorcerer) : Once we got this booklet, we hardly ever played true mage again. The lower power level is a lot of fun. Plus it's a lot easier (IMHO) to make a group of characters that are all usefull and fun to play with this version.

Werewolf : Hey, sure it's a bit strange at times, but playing a 500 lb killing machine with the mind of an eco-terrorist is kinda fun :) . Plus, the focus on spiritualism, tribes, honor, etc is very cool. My second favorite Whitewolf game.

Changeling : Not QUITE as cool as Werewolf, but close. This would be my second favorite game if it wasn't just so darn strange at times. Plus, the fact that the magic system uses terms like "actor" "prop" and "scene" to define things just rubs me the wrong way. But the whole "two lives" thing, the different courts and factions, etc... again, really cool concepts.

Exalted : Now _THIS_ is a game of Whitewolf I can really sink my teeth into, and enjoy with no "But if only"s. I like every facet of this game, and it only gets better with every book they release.

BESM : I'm an Anime lover. I'm a RPG lover. Cross the two and you get one happy person. Plus, the system is really nice in how flexible it is... I've run just about every type of game you can imagine with BESM. Cyberpunk, Fantasy (Dragonlance, as a matter of fact), Mecha, you name it. What really gets this system a vote is the compactness and the flexibility... When any of us gamers are going anywhere far away for a while (Cons, Renfairs, college trips, whatever) I just toss the one book in my pack, a handful of dice, and we scavange paper and pencils wherever we are going.

Shadowrun : I love the setting, and I like the system... It's a bit complex at times, sometimes needlessly so IMHO (Calculating memory usage while decking gets to be a pain, for example), but it's got a lot to like too... the fact that gunshots are actualy a real threat, for example.

Ars Magica : Ahhhh... old Ars... Havn't played it in a good while, but I have fond memories of this one...

The RPG stuff in my collection that has seen the most use :

D&D : For five years when I started in 84 and then for the last two years with 3E. In between, 1E books were sold, and I didn't touch D&D.

Rêve de Dragon : Probably the game that has seen the most use in my collection since 89 when I discovered it. All the people that I play D&D with today have been RDD players alongside me over the years.

Nephilim : Although the books have been read and used, I never actually managed to finish a Nephilim campaign. I guess in the end, that as much as I like the game and the setting, it's just too much hard work to GM, and no one else but me wants to do it ;)

Fading Suns : Much used during a 2-year campaign a few years back. FS is the only space-op RPG that I ever really enjoyed beyond Star Wars RPG (1st Ed.) which worked more because all the players knew the setting...

Jorune : I didn't get to GM or play Jorune that much, but it's such a great setting that it seems to crop back up every few years (I'm in such a phase right now.)

MERP : We played MERP for a couple of years back in 89-90, but I don't have much memories of it (apart from the tables.) I guess we never really got a campaign going.

Call of Cthulhu : I always tried to have a copy of CoC around (a few got "borrowed" or "lost" over the years) because it's a great game for beginners, IMO.

Maléfices : Same as for CoC with the addition that the game was set in early XXth century France and was rules light, making it even more accessible to French players. Haven't used it for years, but there was a time when it got used frequently.

Vampire : I ran about four Vampire campaigns between 93 and 97. I loved the flavour of the 1st Edition, which unfortunately was phased out as more stuff was released (there's only so much flavour you can add in a product line, I guess, after a while, you start adding power :( )

Mage : I still believe Mage to be one of the most original game concepts out there. It's inherently hard to maintain in the long run as the growing PC power makes the world balance harder and harder to believe, but it's a great game nonetheless...

Werewolf : Also ran a couple of campaigns. I loved the "tribal" feel of the game and have fond memories of a few really rocking sessions.

Ars Magica : I don't own much material for Ars Magica, but what I do own got used a bit although, again, no campaign was ever brought to its conclusion.

Star Wars (1st Ed.) : Great beginner's game, and light enough mechanics that you could run a game with little to no preparation. Good stuff, one memorable campaign.

The above are the games that really saw regular use at some point or another. Then there are lots of RPGs that I own but only played a couple of times. I'm sure I'll forget some of them, but there's at least Capitaine Vaudou, MEGA III, Bushido, Castle Falkenstein, Raoul : Le Jeu qui Sent Sous les Bras, Changeling, Cybergeneration, Lyonnesse, Paranoïa, ...

Amazing, looking back, how many different games you manage to play over the years...

Edit : If you want to check out the stuff I don't use, it's listed here

Nevermind. Apparently, I completely misunderstood the topic of the thread. No doubt that was because I was still drinking my first cup of coffee for the day.

I haven't played anything other than 3E.:o
