Sounds like GAMA no?

Not at all. GAMA is targeted at promoting the business. They are not promoting the hobby. They are for the industry and an organization that has been fairly ineffectual.

We need a member society that will promote and grow the hobby without being beholden to the "market."

I've been led to believe that GAMA is an industry focused organization. They have no plans for dierect player promotion. GAMA doesn't advertise the hobby as a whole to the general audience of nongamers.

There is a growing recognition of D&D in mass media. The GE comercial comes to mind.

The RPGA is now a branch of WotC, it is no longer member run. It is nothing more than a vehicle for getting official WotC material out there.

In the past three years, I've recruited 9 players into gaming. Between them, they have bought about $350 worth of stuff. I think that is a better return on investment than the $20 or whatever I would put forth to a gaming society to take out an ad which will largely be ignored or riduculed.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad idea, I just don't think it has any legs.

If we want gaming to grow, it needs to be about getting together with friends (old and new) and having a good time, not about Madison avenue techniques, and providing the press that the publishers (notably WotC and WW) should be doing themselves.

What about living campaigns like Paradigm's Arcanis?

Didn't Blackmoor just launch a new vehicle like the RPGA too?

Rather, I care about the hobby and getting new blood.
I, personally, care little about either the hobby or new blood. The gaming police won't take away the books that I already own if the hobby "dies", and not getting new books isn't a big deal to me.

But then, I don't go into an uproar about canceled TV shows, either.

No thanks.

Even if every RPG publisher went out of business tomorrow, and not a single book were ever produced in actual print again, the hobby would remain. Between the OGL and Ebay we would have all that we'd ever need.

I think so. And FanPro has a Shadowrun network (at least they did at GenCon last year).

Exactly my point. "Growing the hobby" isn't particularly an interest of mine, to be honest with you, as long as I can get good games together with a good group. But if it were, I think it needs to be a grass roots type of thing, not joining a society. If you want to join to hobby, encourage everyone here to recruit someone new to gaming. That'd be significant.

I'm actually a huge Arcanis fan. Yes, it has a very strong RPGA presence, but that is under thier member run campaign program. The RPGA does no advertising for Arcanis, or Kalamar or any other nonWotC vehicle. The RPGA is trying to do more to include nonconvention goers. They are starting to let home campaigns earn points for the member rewards program. But there is still only Dragon and Dungeon to get the word out about the RPGA. If there ever is going to be an ad campaign it should probably come out of the RPGA, but who knows when/if that will ever happen. As an example of PCI's relationship with the RPGA is that there are no Arcanis adventures being published in Dungeon, only thier core campaigns allowed.

Respectfully,
Edward Kopp
