You guys are going to love these: my expanded lists for weapons. I've significantly upped the Attack bonuses to put them more on a par with Defense. Oh, and that's not all they do...

Weapons
Sling: +10 Att; cost 10 gp.
Dagger: +15 Att, -10 Def, +20 MP; cost 50 gp
Light Mace: +25 Att, +5 Def, +10 MP; cost 90 gp
Club: +30 Att, +10 MP; cost 100 gp
Staff: +30 Att, -20 Def, +20 MP; cost 90 gp
Handaxe: +35 Att, -5 Def, -10 MP; cost 100 gp
Shortsword: +35 Att, +5 Def, -20 MP; cost 100 gp
Halfspear: +40 Att, -10 Def, +10 MP; cost 160 gp
Crossbow: +50 Att; cost 250 gp
Heavy Mace: +50 Att, +10 MP; cost 270 gp
Longsword: +60 Att, -20 MP; cost 320 gp
Shortspear: +60 Att, -5 Def, -15 MP; cost 340 gp
Battleaxe: +60 Att, -10 Def, -10 MP; cost 340 gp
Longspear: +70 Att, -40 MP; cost 330 gp
Greatclub: +70 Att, -10 Def, -20 MP; cost 440 gp
Halberd: +80 Att, -40 MP; cost 480 gp
Greatsword: +100 Att, -10 Def, -30 MP; cost 900 gp
Greataxe: +100 Att, -20 Def, -20 MP; cost 920 gp

Formula
d4 = +10 ATT
d6 = +30 ATT
d8 = +50 ATT
d10 = +70 ATT
d12 = +90 ATT

x2 = no change
x3 = +10 Att, -10 Def
19-20 = +10 Att, -10 MP

Reach = +20 DEF, -20 MP

Light = -5 ATT, +5 DEF
2H = -10 MP, -10 DEF

Wizard list = +30 MP, -10 DEF
Simple = +10 MP
Martial = -10 MP

(Then modified for variance)

Cheers!

I'm not liking this particular proposal. It's really out there compared to what basic weapons should do.

I'd rather see something simpler, such as tiered basic weapons. Axes, Swords, Spears, Bows, Staffs, etc. each with 3-5 tiers of strength. The rest should be handled through magic enhancements. Axes might be vastly more powerful but lower magic, but for the most part I think that the idea is to make all types of weapons equally viable. Afterall, I would think that most of choosing a weapon should just be concept and not mechanics.

Interesting. I like it even if you left my broad sword off of the list.

Why do some weapons make you harder to hit or subtract from your MP?

Quite possibly too many numbers... OTOH, you did want variance in weapon choices? There you have it.

Think about it... if you want to use a magic-wielding character, which weapon do you choose?

Cheers!

To make them different from each other! ;)

The theory behind it went:
* Weapons commonly used by Wizards in D&D should give a MP bonus.
* Weapons commonly used by Clerics in D&D (The simple ones) should give a lesser MP bonus.
* Weapons commonly used by Fighters in D&D should give a MP penalty.

To distinguish between the Axes and Swords, I decided that the Axes should be less defensive but hit harder. I don't think the values worked properly, though. I was doing something else at the same time.

It should be: x3: +20 Att, -10 Def; 19-20: +10 Att, I think.

Cheers!

I was looking for the theroy :)

In that vien, why not have Elven Chain give a bump to MP and Dwarven MP give a hicky to MP?

Because when I was creating them, I didn't realise armour could do things like that!

How about...

Leather - +20 DEF, -10 MP - 40 gp
Hide - +30 DEF, -20 MP - 65 gp

Scale mail - +40 DEF, -25 MP - 135 gp
