RttToEE too easy

The danger level really doesn't ramp up until the Crater Ridge Mines - and the choice of entry point and whether to travel left or right of the entry has a big bearing of how tough the inital foray is going to be.

The danger level ramps up again when entering the Outer Fane.

And yet again for the Inner Fane.

Our group breezed through the Hommlet / Moathouse portion so the parallel to your campaign might be similar.

Nulb (and a certain encounter in particular) resulted in one player death.

The body count started to rise in the CRM and spiked up in the Inner Fane.

So it is coming.....

RttToEE is NOT easy - not by far

I'm currently running it for my group.

They sailed thru the first 4 chapters, but with chapter 5 (CRM) I have killed 11 characters in combat plus 4 others via story. (IE players that missed game that didn't want to hold up party)

So just keep going and you'll get the meat grinder your looking for very soon.

*nod* I gotta agree with Tom Cashel also: Mass-Minding makes things alot easier. The character's movements and actions are always co-ordinated, everyone's spell resources are known to each other member, and there's no chance of mincommunication.

Conversely it's really really hard not to mass-mind when playing multiple characters. Sorta like telling a computer to play itself at a game of chess, then adding on.. 'oh yeah, and have both sides play poorly, also'.

The real question is, did any of the characters go the cheese route and make a cleric with two elemental domains? Aka the I-Would-Never-Play-This-Normally-But-Someone-Told-Me-It-Was-Important-For-This-Adventure Cleric.

LOL, not in my campaign.

We have:

Figgle de Fay, the fireball happy (HADOKEN!) gnome illusionist
Flicken Bottomfinder, his recently raised from the dead cousin
Vhran, female Paladin of Helm, detector of evil
Kurik, Vhran's human fighter cohort and squire
Saphire, Vhran's hippogriff, come save the day when called, mount
Romena, the bubbly, air head, priestess of Lathander
Caleniel, the recently deceased elven ranger
Arthonorn, the high minded, ready-to-flee, human bard

Hardly maxed out for an assault against a temple of ELEMENTAL evil.

For the original poster:

Isn't it a little boring to have only one player running the whole party?

I think some of our best moments have been inner-party issues...two examples:

1. On the road to Rastor, the party rides past a motley group of (by appearance), adventurers. The paladin detects evil, notes 3 of 4 evil auras. Figgle, the gnome illusionist, gives the paladin a questioning look, meanwhile mimicing the (apparently for gnomes only) universal symbl for "Should I fireball them?".

Paladin nodes to him (Yes, they are evil). Gnome launches a fireball and combat ensues, with most of the party (save the gnomes) going "Wha?...."

2. Hard to explain, but centering around the 2 gnomes drafting gnomes from a neighboring gnomish village to come do a dance they invented at the Inn, forcing the party bard to play the same annoying tune over and over.

TPK

Well, thank you for the input, but he finally reached the CRM. Very first encounter, they sounded the alarm, and the party was completely overwhelmed. Two hours real time later, the entire party was dead. (He wants me to point out here that he did kill 33 of the lower level baddies, but it was the 3 commander types that did him in) But at least now when we replay the misson he will not be complaining that the first part was so easy. I think that added to the non-planning he did. He assumed this part would be the cake walk the moathouse was, boy was he wrong.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are now believers in the toughness of RttToEE.

Monte Cook's Message Boards

FYI

Monte Cook's Message Boards are a must read for any GM running the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. There is erratta and a FAQ that has a lot of answers to questions that aren't covered in the module text.

This might be of interest :). It's not updated with our most recent deaths, and we stopped playing about 45% into the adventure, I believe.

Excellent write-up. :D
I'm about to start DM'ing this one myself. I was originally targeting the City Of The Spider Queen (at level 10 of course), but further reading of RttToEE kind of hooked me.

Current Candidates for the Dead Book....
Thorzoun Mithriltooth, The Arcane Anvil Of Adbar, Son of Grymforge Mithriltooth (Shield Dwarf Wiz5) - NPC of mine

Fisley Griblingtine (Lightfoot Halfling Rog5)

Galia Be'Feyn (Moon Elven (f) Clr5) of Kossuth (yes the Elemtal God of Fire :D This should get interesting)

Gwenect Moondark (Drow (f) Ranger2) - from Skip Williams' Riders Of Galath's Roost - replaced a dead character.

Markus Of Black Raven (Half-Elven Brd5) - we have yet to learn where "Black Raven" can be found in Faerun.

This should be a great module.
