Rugby World Cup

Nick Mullins, on the BBC website, alleges that the French bribed the Celtic nations (i.e. with the promise that some of the games would be held in their countries) for their votes to give France this tournament instead of England (you'd think that they wouldn't need to bribe the Celts to vote against England, wouldn't you?).

Yeah anything to stick it to the Sassenachs!

I had heard it was something along those lines. Apparently the French wanted to give them money but Wales asked for a couple of pool games to be played at Cardiff instead and this is the result of that. Australia just drew the short straw on that one I think.

Well, sorry to sound smug but :):):):) do the rest of the world suck at rugby or WHAT!!

Admitedly South Africa have been playing well (the ABs only serious challenge I reckon) and the Aussies have been looking dangerous when given half a chance.

But WTF were those English performance against USA or SA? I really feel for the english rugby supporters as you've had your team talked up when in fact they suck with bugger all tactics, depth or creativity.

I also think this competition has provided yet another piece of evidence that Argentina should be in a regular international competition. Problem s bugger all of their players play in the southern hemisphere so Tri-nations isn't a good idea, while the 6 nations don't want them.

They've proved they deserve to be given a chance.

And how about those Georgians huh? They really puled out the game of their lives against Ireland.

None of the northern hemisphere clubs have covered themselves in glory so far - except maybe Scotland who've yet to come up against first class opposition.

England look like old men, France and Wales are too erratic and I've no idea what Ireland are up to!!!

Scotland have done well so far but I suspect we flatter to deceive and when we come up against the ABs at the weekend I think we'll join the ranks of the soundly thrashed -even playing at Murrayfield.

Its looking more and more like an All-Black South Africa final...

Is anyone else still following the rugby? I have to say, last weekend´s results were something of a surprise. I´m in Australia at the moment, and I´ve been keeping my head down for the last few days.

The funny thing (for an outsider) is how seriously it´s being taken in New Zealand. I´ve been watching their news, and it´s all been about the defeat to France, and national inquiries and reports from sports psychologists about how to behave toward the players when they get home. I love the fact that there´s one country that actually takes its rugby so seriously.

So any predictions for the rest of the tournament? I figure that the Saffers will beat Argentina and make it to the final. But Eng v Fra is anybody´s guess, and either team could upset South Africa in the final.

It's turning out to be the most interesting world cup ever - two of the favourites blown away in the quarters and the Pumas in the semis !

England's old men came good and really stuffed the Wallabies and the Les Blues have risen to the challenge!

I have no idea how it's going to go from here - quite frankly I wouldn't be surprised by an England/Argentina final - and you'd have been laughed at if you suggested that was possible before the tournament.!

My gut tells me that the French will get sloppy after having beaten NZ, and just fail to show up at all. On the other hand, if the crowd gets them going, England´s fairly limited abilities will be exposed.

If Argentina´s pack can overpower SA, then they have a definite chance of reaching the final. They have the backs to finish off the job if they get the upper hand. Sadly, though, I reckon that experience will tell here.

From the sounds of it, it wasn't France getting sloppy, but more France foolishly trying to play the English way that caused the situation that very few people would have predicted before the tourament. I mean, I'm an England fan and, while I was fairly confident we'd get through the group stages, I never entertained the thought of a second successive final appearance. I was fully expecting an all southern hemisphere semi-final line up!

So the matches this weekend are replays of earlier matches from the pool stages; but will the outcome be the same? I reckon that France will be more fired up than Argentina, and England are looking much different from a month ago. If they can play their own game, they'll have a chance; the difficulty is that SA can play much the same game, and sometimes even better. I'd say SA are 60-40 favourites to win the Webb Ellis Cup.
