Yeah, that's what I'll probably do in the end, but there is just not as much demand for pearls in general as there was for the spell component pearls. Also, I'm thinking it might make a good adventure to have the party have to go to these islands that are in political and economic disarray, with each island having it's own warlord, and the party has to navigate the intrigue to find some mcguffin.
I would run with this idea myself. Have it set up that, until recently, the only way to identify magical items was with a pearl of 100gp worth. Then a magical researcher came across a way to do it cheaper (I don't know PF is identify basically free to cast now?) Despite the nation in questions' desire this knowledge became widespread and now their economy is suffering. I wouldn't say they would be ruined as pearls are still a valued commodity just no where near the extent of before. You could even have efforts by this nation to stop the spread of this 'new' spell to identify magic items. I think it would be a great way to introduce the changes from 3E to PF.
