Rules Compendium - Worst timed release ever?

guess I'm just disappointed it didn't come out a year ago.

The uses of skills changed with Complete Scoundrel. If it came out a year ago, the book would already be out of date. That's why something like this isn't produced until the company is sure that the rules are not going to change anymore, ever (for that edition).

I actually think this will be a great last book to buy. I plan on switching to 4e... if the party will go for it, and if 4e seems decent, etc. But for the next several months this book looks to be incredibly helpful. And after that... well... Hey - 4e and 3e are two totally different systems. Whose to say we'll never play 3e again? Or that when we all move away from each other that I won't be in another group that won't find it helpful? I really can't think of a good, solid reason not to buy it right now, even though I am looking very forward to 4e. I've planned on it for some time - plans definitely haven't changed even with the announcement. :)

We'll probably grab it, despite the impending release of 4e (and the likelihood that we'll update our D&D games to the new rules when they become available). 3/3.5e has been the lynchpin of our gaming life since its arrival, and I suspect that there will still be occaisional calls to revisit the old rules even after 4e hits.

That makes sense, and I'm not sure why I didn't think of these reasons when I first saw it...guess I'm just disappointed it didn't come out a year ago. I really loved the Rules Cyclopedia for OD&D, having all the rules in one book is awesome.
I was just going to mention the timing of the Rules Cyclopedia release in comparison to the Rules Compendium. It's a nice bookend for my collection and, as I picked up Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk yesterday, it'll be the last WotC book I buy for years to come.

I may buy it for the commentary alone, and as a thank you to WotC for 3e. I've had a lot of fun with 3e, and agree it will be worth playing, just as earlier editions of the game are still fun to many people. Maybe I'll even start up another 3e campaign this winter when I've got time, and end it with a bang when 4e comes out. Short campaigns that you plan to end can be a lot of fun.
I still don't quite understand everyone's eagerness to leave 3e for 4e before we have any complete picture of what 4e will entail. I'm sticking with what works until 4e can prove itself for better or worse. Granted, from what I've heard I have my opinions about which way it's leaning. ;)

Not eager to leave anything, I'm just not running anything right now, so 4e seems like a good way to start up again, if it's good.

I see, haven't picked that one up. Been too busy working lately to game much. :(

That makes perfect sense! Apologies for my assumption.

Happy gaming! :D

In another thread, I was hoping the rules compendium would fix 3.5 rules that cause problems, and reword a bunch of feats/abilities that are poorly worded. If it does taht I will pick it up.

If I decide not to go on to 4E I will pick it up.

A couple big ifs

Luckily a friend is buying it first, so i can borrow his copy.

I guess I should say I am assuming it will contain any and all rules fixes 3.5 needs to be a "stable" rules system. At least as stable as it can possibly be. If not I am such a "3E hater" I have bought most fo the rules books, so its unlikely I'll need/want to buy it unless it does try to address rules problem in one last "official" manner.
