Rules Cyclopedia hits DnD Classics

For those of us who picked this up the first time around, and because WotC is using OBS again, we got an email saying the file had been updated in our library and allowing for a free replacement download. Good on you, WotC!

Yeah, it took me like 5 seconds to Buy That Now; I'm glad it was on my wishlist!! :D It came in pretty good shape too, though maybe smelling a bit on the musty side.

I will say, however, that I think Dark Dungeons is actually a pretty good improvement in a few areas, like extending the demihuman advancement charts and clarifying some bits with initiative. Since BX/BECMI/RC evolved, some rule reconciliation can really help. If/when I run an RC game, I very well might use some of the tweaks from there instead, much like I did with OSRIC when I ran AD&D.

One of my favorite little bits of streamlining: I used the "d20+attack bonus+target AC vs. 20" attack rolls in my AD&D game a few years back, and I found it to be simpler than futzing with a chart while maintaining the math. It's presented very clearly in Dark Dungeons.

(I checked out Darker Dungeons, too, and while it has a few neat bits, I think I prefer something closer to the original.)

Cool!

Though does that book include the I of BECMI?

Edit: well it says so in the blurb. I love those history sections.

Edit, edit, I meant that the blurb says it isn't. Sorry.

Historical note: When the Rules Cyclopedia was produced, the Immortals rules also got a major rewrite and reissue in the Wrath of the Immortals product.

Cheers!

This is pretty neat. There are precious few Core books on D&D Classics. It's fun that you could dop $20 and have all that you need to play the game for months.
