Meh. I could "he can" in 3e as well. The players are not going to see the monster stats so they don't know if there might be a template, feat, or just a variant ability. :P

Great! Then replace "Damn you fourth edition." with "Damn you exception based monster." and the joke can still be funny?

Again rather thn an edition comment, this was a funny scene about screwing a rules lawyer. :p

Hahahaha, nice! A lot of my players are used to hugely exception-based monsters, so the conversation for me sounds more like:

"I shift into flank behind this monster, and-"

"You take an opportunity attack."

"No no, I shifted"

"I know you did. He reels around with his scimitar and takes an opportunity attack"

":eek: Oh what!? :rant:"
