Run vs. Charge

I've used Run in a surprise partial round to close a lot of distance to get the Rogue out of jam. He was scouting 30+ squares ahead and when he ambushed the kobold guards, the rest of us had to hurry up to catch up.

Since the kobolds were surprised but we weren't, it was safe to Run and there wasn't anything that would get my character into javelin range anyway.

Let's say my character movement is 5. Can I take 3 squares in one direction then change direction, moving two squares to my target and then charge in same direction?

Yes. You can also shift away from a foe and charge a different foe, stand from prone and charge, climb a wall and then charge etc.

You could use a move action to move anywhere you like in any direction, followed by a charge. However, once you are in to the charge portion of your turn you must move to the nearest square from which you can attack the enemy.

So you could use a move action to move anywhere legal you like in any direction, and then follow that with a charge, which must be as direct a line as you can manage (and at least 2 squares).
